Conclusion - Question First
Why do both hard drives show to be offline in the boot up Intel RAID manager? OR
What has me stumped is why both hard drives show to be offline in the RAID manager and the computer won’t boot.
The first half of this problem became evident last night.
RAID1 degraded (This was the first half)
Drive 1 position hard drive would not reset to “normal” in the Intel RAID manager in Windows 7(I do not use the Matrix Manager.) I use the newer Intel manager – I think it is called RST. The instances of having to rebuild the RAID1 have decreased dramatically since I began to use the newer Intel RAID manager a few years ago but when it has degraded I simply go into the Intel RAID manager and set the offending drive to “Normal” and the RAID1 rebuilds automatically.
This time the drive will not reset to “Normal”.
When this occurred last night everything else appeared to be working normally.
The hard drive was accessible through Explorer, etc.
It was late so I shut the computer down thinking it would reboot as it normally does and I’d either replace the hard drive or whatever.
When I tried to boot it up this morning it would not boot.
I went into the RAID manager on boot up and both drives indicated they are “Offline”.
I looked in the BIOS set up and both hard drives were under the excluded section in the Startup and not included in the boot up sequence.
I moved both of them to the top and second place in the boot up sequence but that did not change the fact that they were shown as “offline” in the RAID boot up program and the computer did not boot up.
I put in my hard drive test CD and on quick test both drives Passed BUT
on the long test the second drive, or the drive in slot 1, failed the “read element” part of the test. No surprise but why is the other drive being affected this way and what can I do about it?
If I can get the other hard drive to show online then I should be able to boot up the computer and I can install a new hard drive in the drive one position and rebuild the RAID1.

Re: Hard Drives Reset to "Offline" in RAID1 - W700ds - Won't Boot - How to Get Good Drive Reset to "Online"
I gathered myself and reset the bad disk to non-raid in the bootup raid manager and then the machine booted. I had a replacement HD so I shut down te computer and put the new HD in slot 1 and rebooted and it is rebuilding. So far so good.
