135W and 170W power supply questions

As I've recently discovered, the W510 I picked up on Craigslist desperately needs a 135W power supply. The 90W AC adapter that came with it (Lenovo) results in massive performance throttling.

Seems Lenovo's 170W power supply might also work? Just have to file down the little nubs inside the connected and it will fit the W510?

I know these are both large adapters, but I can't seem to find size and weight specs, though I've seen it suggested the 170W might actually be smaller and lighter than the 135W. Anyone know for sure?

Edit: Found some specs on the 135W power supply: 6.5" x 1.4" x 3.2"; 1.38lbs. Not sure on weight, as Lenovo lists it as both 1.38lbs and 0.83kg (which would make it 1.8lbs). http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/itemdetail ... #techspecs

Looks like 170W power supply for the W520/W530 is nearly identical in dimensions, and 1.7lbs so might be more or less than the 135W adapter depending on what the latter actually weighs. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/migr-76762

I see a couple of different FRU's for the W510 AC adapter: FRU 45N0055 and 45N0059.

I'm not seeing any. Ran a search and the most recent one I see is from 2013.

Thanks. Looks like he's sold all his 135w adapters. Plenty on ebay for under $20 though.

I am running my W510 on a 90 watt power supply in the back yard right now as I post this, and I am not seeing any throttling issues. The machine does slow down when W10 does updates in the back ground, but that could also be a function of my wireless also.

I bought a used W510 just a few weeks ago. It came with a 90W supply and I noticed immediately - and dramatically - reduced performance when operating plugged in. Unplugging the adaptor rectified the issue, unsurprisingly.

A quick Googling indicated that I would need the larger 135W power supply, which I bought. Sadly, I am still getting both a decrease in performance **and** the same warning at boot time:

"The connected AC adapter has a lower wattage than the recommended model which was shipped with the system.
This will increase the time to charge the battery, and system performance will be adjusted to match the available power.
Please connect the AC adapter which was shipped with the system for best system performance.
Press the F3 key if you do not want to see the incorrect AC adapter warning message again.
Press the ESC key to continue."

I have a Lenovo-branded power supply. Does anyone know where I could start troubleshooting? Should I be checking the resistance between the centre and sleeve of the power supply cord to ensure that it is "reporting" properly? Does the battery's health have anything to do with this? (I tried booting with the battery removed; still got the error.)
