W520 trackpoint + buttons issue
W520 trackpoint + buttons issue
Hi all,
Got a W520 in good condition. Have this weird issue where my trackpoint and trackpoint buttons do not work. Keyboard works perfectly. Tried disconnecting the keyboard, replugging it, etc. No dice. Tried enabling/disabling trackpoint in BIOS, same thing. Have all the proper Ultranav drivers installed in Windows 7 64. Also same issue happens on a bootable puppy linux flash drive, so it is a hardware issue. Had bought a replacement keyboard and still have the same issue with that one as well. Any suggestions welcome, thanks

Re: W520 trackpoint + buttons issue
Physically disconnect the touchpad from the board and try again.
It has been well-documented that a defective touchpad may interfere with trackpoint functionality, even if it is disabled in software/firmware.

Re: W520 trackpoint + buttons issue
@dr_st; he didn't say a word about the touchpad, only that his trackpoint doesn't work. Perhaps he forgot to mention it, but otherwise I would assume his touchpad works fine.
That being said; the connector of the keyboard is very fragile.
Also; what drivers did you use in W7?
I can't speak for Linux, but if Synaptics drivers there are at least as buggy as those for Windows...

Latest drivers from Lenovo's site. Disconnected the touchpad and the trackpoint + trackpoint buttons work perfectly.
Now when I connect the touchpad again, both devices do not work.

Re: W520 trackpoint + buttons issue
If you have an FPR, try disconnecting the small cable from the bottom of the FPR, then plug the palmrest back in.
See if that helps.
If not, get another touchpad, such as this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/222387979108
You can also try to temporary connect the palmrest from another Thinkpad (like Tx0/Tx10/Tx20), to see if the mobo-connector is still working OK.

Re: W520 trackpoint + buttons issue
Removed the palmrest and unplugged the FPR, touchpad, and touchpad buttons. Replugged and reassembled, works like a charm. Thanks all.
