Well, I just bought a W701 on Ebay for $202 with a charger but no battery. I have no specific need for it but the hardware specs and expandability drew me in (also the fact the chargers alone for it are $100-150 on Ebay). What shall I do with this beast? :D

One idea, put a W700ds LCD assmebly on it. Go to starbucks, say you have a 2 screen laptop, when they dont believe you, whip out the second display.

Second idea, run AIDA64 with a battery as a portable space heater

Third idea, watch movies on the couch

Fourth idea, give it to me for free :D .
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I've been using a ThinkPad W701 as a main machine for almost a year now, did run into some minor issues but it turned out just to be Firefox acting weird (sometimes the video driver would black out and reset, and turning off hardware acceleration fixed it)... I have a 480GB SSD, 2TB HDD and 24GB in mine running Windows 7 Ultimate :) (also have the DVD combo burner, may change it for a Blu-ray if I can find a cheap one)

Thanks for the reply.

1. I like the idea about the DS assembly, I will have to consult the HMM to see if it can be added to the current LCD lid or if that lid/screen is specific to 700DS

2. If the battery is anything like the one in my former Precision, I would probably heat this whole room for the winter under heavy load.

3. I have a projector, but I can give it a whirl.

4. Ain't nothing free in this world :)

Thanks, I will need one of those. I just hope the memory cover on the bottom is generic W5/700 and not model specific. I think the cradle is specific to the 700 as well... D'oh.

I just love the real keyboard in the age of chicklet keys

Thanks for the tip about the hardware accelerator. Where is the second set of memory slots, under the keyboard like the T410/420?

Glad to meet the guy who outbid me... (Actually, I was way down the list)

The W701 makes a great portable workstation. I have one with 3 drives, 32gb of ram, and use it as a development
machine. Not only that, but if you put a cup of coffee on the left side near the fan exhaust, it stays warm to the touch.
Daily Drivers: W520 i7-2760QM | W520 i7-2860QM | T420 FHD IPS i7-2640m | W701
Others: W510 | 701C (on its shrine)
Non-TP: Dell m7510
Currently Experimenting With: T420s

Small world, nice to meet you. I may do the same, I was thinking a base Linux OS with VirtualBox for Win boxes. I wonder if there is a whitelist removed BIOS?

Built in drink warmer? What an age we live in.
