W520 Alarm sound, then no post on power on. [Solved]

#1 Post by RUNDEN » Thu Aug 24, 2017 1:58 pm

Recently my W520 has stopped working.
I was using some intensive programs, and the machine then went into hibernate mode as the battery was running low, while it was going into hibernate mode, the W520 started a very loud alarm noise, it was a low pitched beep then a high pitched beep repeating. Being in a public place and worrying it could catch fire or something, I hard power off by hold the power button for 10 seconds. I later tried to plug it in and turn it on but it just turns off again after about a second.
The power button lights up, so does the hdd activity light, bluetooth light(even though it has no bluetooth module), thinklight, caps lock light, dvd drive light, all go on as normal, the fan spins up, but then it goes off without any POST.
I've tried removing everything, ram, hdd, keyboard, cmos battery, dvd drive, wlan cards, but nothing makes any difference.
Removing all the ram does make it do a 1331 beep code for no ram.
I assembled the machine myself from parts, and it has worked with no problems for about 2 months, the only recent difference was moving the ram into a dual channel setup, as some is DDR3L and some is DDR3, but no configurations of ram are working now.
I've tried discharging static by leaving it for a while and turning it on with no power sources, but it hasn't made any difference.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Remove charger, main battery, RAM, HD, CD, any USB stuff, then press the power button and hold it down for 20 seconds.
Plug in only charger and try to start. It should beep 1-3-3-1. Switch off, remove charger.
Put in only 1 DDR3 module, plug in only charger and try to boot into BIOS.
If 1-3-3-1 beep, try another DDR3 module in same slot and try to boot into BIOS again.
Repeat for all 4 slots with different modules.
If anything goes, add another module and try again.
To see how RAM modules should be inserted, check this: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P ... a-p/249257

If you have removed the CMOS battery, then any successful start should beep for date and time.

Sorry I should have been more clear, I've tried everything without the battery already.and have now tried pretty much every combination of ram, and even tried some from other machines.
The same thing happens.
I don't think the problem is with the ram, it only does the 1-3-3-1 beep code when there is none inserted, whenever there is ram it just turns itself off after turning on.

I noticed that it powers on for a split-second and slightly moves the fan when plugged in, and then trys to turn on a few seconds later, and retrys turning on annother second later, then stops.

EDIT:
Just as I was writing this post, I just remembered I do not own the correct 170W power supply for the W520, I only have my T61's 65W adapter, and since I have been trying to turn it on without any battery power and not enough ac power it hasn't been turning on. I borrowed a fully charged battery from a T410, and it powers on with no issues.
I guess the only issue was my stupidity, sorry.
I'm still worried about what the alarm noise was though, I can't find out what it is anywhere, and I have all the beeps disabled in the bios. I don't think it's a low battery alarm as I've never heard it before and the battery has ran out like this many times.

Thanks for your help anyway! :)

You'll need at least a 90W, better is the 135W and of course the best is 170W for that machine.
It's asking for serious trouble (like fire from an overheating charger) if all you use is a 65W on such a machine!
Sorry to say, but that is plain stupid.

Runden.

I was just wondering, how is it that you don't get either the post-BIOS notification screen regarding the wrong adapter, or the Power Manager notification upon Windows startup, which advises of the same condition? My W520 will not charge with either the 65W or 90W adapter unless powered off, and only runs on battery with either adapter is attached.

Regards.

Those chargers may be slightly different because they are from 2008. Possibly lacks some kind of protection circuitry?
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.
