So, how long should it take to install this update from MS? Both computers started with Win7 and were upgraded to Win10 through the free upgrade program a couple of years back. The W500 is a T9400 CPU, 4gb of memory and the original hard drive. The T61 is a T7250, 4gb of memory and a larger but still mechanical hard drive. I hesitate to to a clean install as the W500 has Office 2010 on it and I prefer the student have that version. I got the computer from my previous employer and it had Office installed on it from that company but I do not have any media to do a re-install. The T61 has Office 2008 and I do have media for that product.
The other W500 would not accept the Win 10 upgrade because of the dual video cards in that computer. I prefer the student have a Win 10 OS just because that is what they are used to in school
Appreciate any info on this 1703 update.

Try to find out if his school provides Office 365, then you can just install that on a superior Windows machine (Vista, 7). 10 offers nothing over 7.

The bad news, at least for me, is that the W500 lost the dedicated video card. I was able to switch it to integrated video card only and it does work just not as well as it once did. Now I have to wonder how much life is left in the motherboard.
Or dump Windows altogether and switch over to Linux.
In either case your machine will live longer and be not as obtrusively monitored by Micro$haft.

Are you sure that the Linux drivers for switchable GPUs are really better than those in Windows?

Guess not all Linuxes act the same though.

I'm surprised that W500 GPU is not supported note there are some W500 with HD3650 which does works well in windows 10 (knew this on T500 with HD3650) but what about the ATI Mobility FireGL V5700?
No. This W500's graphics will not be coming back. When I stated that the ATI video section went bad, I mean that a component on the motherboard failed. With the on board Intel graphics I can see the Thinkpad initial splash screen and get into the BIOS. With the ATI section enabled, the Thinkpad splash screen is not diaplayed; I have to "guess" when to hit the F1 key for the BIOS. And, when I do get into the BIOS, I can see the screen a bit on an alternate display plugged into the VGA port but not on the laptop display. The screen is badly distorted; has banding; poorly formed characters; bad colors; etc; etc. With the Integrated Intel display on the Thinkpad splash screen is normal; BIOS display is normal; it just works. Even Win 10 run normally on the ATI video before it quit. Now, I have to run laptop on the integrated video.

This solution worked for me! 5 screws to disassemble the keyboard and 2 to release the Intel Turbo memory card and I no longer I have to think about buying a new device.2ndgencamaro wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2018 12:13 pmFor anyone else who stumbles to this thread and may be having issues, I believe that I have stumbled on to the solution. Windows 10 version 1703 hung on every attempt to install it on both a W500 and a T61. The point of failure was the first reboot during the upgrade. Finally, I removed the Intel Turbo memory card from the laptop of the T61 and the update is now applying. The W500 also has an Intel Turbo memory card. That piece of hardware is probably the problem. Assuming that the install completes, I will be doing the same thing to the W500 and tryng once more with that laptop. I will report back on the success or failure.
