W520 - Broken Trackpad Connector on Motherboard

#1 Post by DiagonalArg » Tue Dec 26, 2017 1:36 am

Hey all! I picked up a non-working W520 for $15, thinking I could get parts. After I got home, discovered that after blowing out the fan, it worked great! Except for one thing ... The ribbon cable for the trackpad has a small connector with a tiny clip, located on the motherboard. That connector has completely broken off of the motherboard. I'm not talking about the clip breaking from the connector, as here: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/how-to-r ... therboard/, but the whole connector is snapped off and gone. Is there any hope for my trackpad? Any way to re-attach that cable to the mobo?

Find a matching connector or (faulty) motherboard, use a rework-station and Bob's your uncle.
Otherwise you'll need to replace the motherboard, as it's highly unlikely that you can manually (re)solder such a connector.
Or, learn to live with the trackpoint and forget about a touchpad (and FPR) on that machine.
A lot of us don't give a hoot about a touchpad and disable it.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Bob's your uncle? Are you in AU?? :)

Ok, if those are the choices, I think I'm going to have to live with the trackpoint, though it's *really* stiff. I mean, I could probably find a dead mobo someplace, but I haven't access to the proper soldering tools.

Thanks for your input!
