Core 2 Duo Extreme X9100 on W500

#1 Post by N33dF0rSp33dFan » Wed Mar 14, 2018 6:44 am

Hello everybody!

I've just got a X9100 in my W500, did some testing and I have only one problem.
After some time doing some CPU-intensive things, the processor speed will lower from 3.06GHz to 1.6 GHz. Why is that? My temps are around 60C, which are close to the T9600 I had previously installed.

I looked up some threads and I have seen that the solution is to use ThrottleStop. However, I couldn't find a way to set it up to stay at the right processor speed.
Note that I'm not interested in overclocking it, just to keep the frequency at the maximum stock speed and not to go up and down. (In power manager, the laptop is set to be at max CPU speed, so this is not an issue.)

Thanks in advance!

Check the thermal paste. 60C maybe the onboard diode, not the internal CPU one. It doesnt use turboboost so It shpuld be running all the time. It's in AC power, right?

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Sorry, forgot to mention 60C in full load.
Yes, it's on AC power.

I had a CPU fan stop once because it was clogged. The CPU diode only reported 80C but it was thermal throttling BAD. The CPU diode isnt as accurate as the thermal probe inside the chip. Download Coretemp and see how the REAL temps are.

I have TPFanControl installed and these are the real temps. The fan has no issue whatsoever.

Ok, if thermal throttling can be eliminated, that is strange. Is it the dedicated GPU model? At this point someone will probably need to help.

Yes, it has the FireGL V5700.

I think I may have found the solution to this.
Using ThrottleStop, uncheck BD PROCHOT and the speed will remain @ 3.06 GHz. However, the temps will be a bit higher, in the mid 70's (75-76C in TPFanControl, 82/79C on the cores in TS).
I haven't tested it on Intel Graphics yet, however the temps should be around 5-10C lower.

I imagine your battery life will also die, although on these models it's not great to begin with.

Probably, but since I'm using it mostly as a desktop replacement, it's not a big deal. I can disable TS and go to Power Saver mode, which lower the clock speed to 800MHz, enough for some word processing and light web browsing, if I really want to go at work/school with it.
