W500 WUXGA vs other 16:10 15" displays?
W500 WUXGA vs other 16:10 15" displays?
The W500 LG WUXGA is really good in terms of colours, viewing angles, contrast...
BUT, it's not very bright (CCFL) and doesn't do well outdoors.
In 16:10 / 15.4, is there anything that beats this display apart from the Macbook Pro Retina?

Re: W500 WUXGA vs other 16:10 15" displays?
There is a Samsung RGB LED with proprietary connector and pinout used in Dell laptops that one intrepid Thinkpad modder was able to hook up to a T500.
Your best bet is LED modding your WUXGA display by replacing the CCFL tubes with LED strips. How to accomplish this I actually have no idea. Other forum users may know someone to contact. I think xiphmont is the best one to contact. You can also look on xccfl.com for kits. I don't know how well they work, if they maintain brightness, etc.
The brightest CCFL WUXGA screens are dual CCFL and crazy bright, but they won't work in Thinkpads which only support 1 bulb. The brightest single bulb CCFL WUXGAs I know of are LP154WU1 TLC1 (matte) and LP154WU1 TLA2 (glossy). The TLC1 needs extra sockets ground off the frame. TLC1 is also software incompatible with the T500's ATI graphics chipset, at least in Windows. TLC1 is also blue biased, but the contrast is amazing. Black looks black.
The SHARP WUXGAs are highly acclaimed and quite bright, but their brightness stepping is broken in the T500 which thinks they are LED displays. They work perfect in T61.

And then there are the 15.4" 16:10 Sharp WUXGA LQ154M1LW2A or LQ154M1LW02.
These are/were used in various Dell D800 series.
They have 4 metal brackets that need to be carefully cut off, using e.g. Wiss 3M aviation cutters.
Any 'leftovers' up to 3mm are alright, there is enough room inside the lids.
After that they are a drop-in replacement.
I have used them successfully in R500/T500/T60/T61 (never had a W500).

Cant it be LED modded?
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I'm sure they can, but I have never done that, check with forum member xiphmont.
Re: W500 WUXGA vs other 16:10 15" displays?
I know the Dell M4400 has a dual CCFL display. Any chance this is the compatible one for the T61/W500 etc.?
If so I might just grab a whole machine, and butcher it if I don't like the ergonomics. Individual panels for hundreds of dollars are just a bit costly at the moment.
EDIT:
Looks like the M4400 uses LTN154CT02 and LP154WU2 for WUXGA CCFL - none of which I think are compatible.

Dual CCFL does not work in a Thinkpad.
Re: W500 WUXGA vs other 16:10 15" displays?
I forget the name, but there's this guy selling LED-kits for T500, which he confirmed would work in the W500. Might want to look into that.
