Like eight year old Thinkpads...
I would never even visit such an outdated topic if I were you. I'm sure OP would be grateful at least.

FYI: Classic ThinkPad Hardware -> ThinkPad W500/510/520 and W7x0 Series -> W500/510/520 and W700/710 series specific matters only

Seems like right place for obsolete W700 topics. Or maybe we should close all forums related to 8+ years old Thinkpads.

I'm pretty sure that statement is a joke.

I'm pretty sure this topic is ruined by persistent offtopic and therefore should be closed.

What's the point of the last few posts?

W700 is a great machine, still usable up to this day, albeit with quite some number of minor and major issues (AC adapter availability, not the best LCD, GPU failures, CPU throttling without battery, SUPERBULKY design with huge LCD bezel, almost non-upgradeable considering GPU). 8 years old or 80 will only make it more legacy. As long as it gets the job done, it's a good machine for everyday use.

And this is brought to you from a frankenpad.

Still, for 17" machines do bear in mind that - apart from keyboard, DS and colorimeter/tablet options - there was nothing in W700 that was not done better in either HP (moddability, screen, reliability) or Dell (heat, expandability, raw power, screen, battery life). Same time those two cost 1/2-1/4 of W700/W701 price.

I think display is one of the strongest points. At least with WUXGA display, don't know about WSXGA+.

Agree. But it's still HP or Dell.

Did you see the options offered by Dell or HP same time?

HP offered RGB-Led Dreamcolor 1 panel - RGB from W701 was pretty close.
Dell M6400 offered ultrasharp edge-to-edge RGB Led display.

Both far, superior to CCFL WUXGA offered in W700. If anyone argues I'd throw rocks at him. It's too bad I have never done comparison one to another; had all 3 at the same time, the difference is huge. It's not that W700 display is bad - it is very good infact - but loses with both Dell and HP.

WXGA+ was a poor joke.

I saw HP with Dreamcolor, it's fantastic. Never payed much attention to Dell, I must admit. But having experience with D830, I can say it's pretty decent laptop, in some aspects even better than T61 (better display, native SATA-2 and my wife says it's much prettier than any TP), but it was more expensive than T61 anyway. HP and Dell are not my cup of tea, I'll stick to TP.

I had same impression with my wife's T540 WXGA. Just wondering what Lenovo had in mind putting poor quality displays in new, expensive machines.

Some of those Dell D830 (and many others in that series) had the Sharp LQ154M1LW2A or LQ154M1LW02 WUXGA screens,
that I have been "promoting" for 15.4" T60/T61/T500/R500.
None better than those (and no, I am not sponsored by Sharp).

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

And that's how I got this D830 with WUXGA display. It was not Sharp, but it's still better than one I had in my T61p. Seems Dell was not making savings on displays back then.

Typing this from a freshly upgraded W700. Replaced T9600 with X9100, it was so cheap that I could not resist it. Another upgrade was RAM, instead of 2x2GB Samsung PC8500 now it has 2x4GB Kingston PC8500. Not so cheap as X9100, unfortunately.

Do you have any sudden shutdowns while working unplugged?

It's always plugged, my battery is dead. I'm using 170W ac adapter, everything is working fine with X9100 and two drives. If you have sudden shutdowns on battery, it's faulty for sure. I had the same scenario on T61p, battery was showing good status and capacity, but first serious load was followed by shutdown, even when battery was fully charged. After battery replacement everything came back to normal.

I did send the battery back, twice... Finally I’m left with two batteries from different brands (none from lenovo) and this stupid problem haunting me.

I have downclocked my GPU with nVidiaInspector software a bit. It did little help, at least... The Adobe suite programs start without shutting down. I’m going to try with Blender :)

The battery's were not designed to last long. The W700/W700ds are huge machines with a lot of power.

I believe my Q9000 W700 got around ~2 hrs practically idling with the MaxBright display cranked up.

Really!? I've never seen a W700 last that long.

Update:

New 6600mAh battery (Patona https://patona.eu/en/our-portfolio/
BIOS Update to 2.18, the last one
BIOS Whitelist removed

After 8 cycles, battery holds around 75 minutes watching 720p YT full screen video.

Hehe...can you do a test for me? Run HeavyLoad(free stress test) and can you crank the MaxBright screen to the top and see what the battery life is. Burn a CD at the same time if you can. I bet you its probably in the ball park of 15-20 minutes.

It was just for the reference, this battery is cheap (40 EUR) and quality is very good.
