W500 Display Issues?

#1 Post by nightninja96 » Mon Oct 15, 2018 3:38 pm

Hello, I have been looking at 2 ThinkPad W500s with one problem in common; they both power on, but they will ot display a single thing, no post screen or anything. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

All input is appreciated! :D

To what extent are they powering on? Do they POST? Do they have RAM? Do they work with external monitors?

It is possible the CCFL backlight has burnt out. Shine a flashlight on the LCD, do you see any faint pixel illumination?

It is possible they succumb to ATI Death caused by degraded thermal paste leading to overheating GPU. But every W500 can cheat death as they have Switchable Graphics. Try to pull the CMOS battery and boot up, it should be in Intel GFX mode, go to BIOS and set it to Integrated graphics, disable OS detection. You lose digital video but otherwise your machine is good to go for the rest of the board's life.

Because it can be any of many different things, I would avoid them. Just look for a cheap working T500 and get a display upgrade, it is the same laptop. Or get a newer, faster, better W-series.

I'm not too sure what has been done with them, but here is the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/392121814956

The keyboard looks pretty worn out on the picture one. They're missing batteries and RAM, I'd look for other listings if you want a *500.

I have A TON of extra ThinkPad parts that would be compatible with that system, so that's really not much of a problem...
So, what do you think is wrong with them?

Without working on them in person I can't make an educated guess as to what is wrong with them.

You may be able to harvest some nice 1920x1200 LCDs out of them. But it's easier to just buy the LCDs by themselves. LP154WU1 TLC2 was used in HP laptops and is very high quality, I run it in my T500, 100% compatible.
