Dead W700. Ideas?

#1 Post by TheForgottenKing » Thu Jan 17, 2019 5:24 pm

I have a dead W700 (from wustjefan) on my hands...

When I got it and opened it the motherboard had a spot of white powder on it that I removed with a toothbrush. The HDD and Audio boards appear to have damage too. These are minor problems, however. It does not boot. At first it sounded out two short beeps, then I cleaned it. The W700 boots without making an error sound but fails to turn on the screen or external monitor. Suspecting the GPU to be defective, I bought an HP FX2700M off eBay and tried that with the same result. No beeps but the indicator lights do turn on. Maybe the HP GPU won't work, or maybe something else is up. There was rust on some screws and the WiFi card so I suspect liquid damage...

I am not sure what to do now. I suspect the board is damaged. I may try to put a different board into it, as repairing W700 boards would run me >$150.

Update: I tore the machine to it's core and there is corrosion EVERYWHERE. Display cable, LCD, IO/HDD board, Cantiga Chipset, Cover, Case, etc, etc

I think I am going to try to shoehorn a T500/T61/similar board into this thing.

How long did it take for that W700 to arrive from Poland and how much was the shipping? I'm downstate Illinois.

One thing: you did not get it from me so please avoid confusion (see below). It _MAY_ be one of the units I have owned before, but I did not sell it nor trade it to you.

I don't think TheForgottenKing may have any idea. He simply did not get it from me :) I think the last time I have sent a bigger parcel directly to the US was in pre-Trump era.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

That's "stupid"(given for the effort you are reducing computing power)..for Pete's sakes you have an entire W700 shell. Throw a real motherboard from an Alienware or something Lets see what a W700 can REALLY do(call 51nb and see if they'll spot you on this adventure  )

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Yep, apologies wustjefan. Bit of confusion between me and the guy who sent it to me. For everyone else, wustjefan did not sell this to me, it is just likely that this was his unit that he sold to smug for cheap, then smug traded to me. No one here did anything wrong, please do not point to wustjefan as a bad seller. The machine was sold as-is and the condition was hard to know. For all I know it might work.

Planning to try to boot it headless

Not a half bad idea. I just figured it would be easier as the connections are the same.

The W700 display connector is not swappable with the T500 or T61 connector by a long shot so past they keyboard both land you at square one.

That's correct, I tried and it didn't work. However, the W700's display can be driven by a T60 (and a T61/T500 likely) so if I can figure out what that connector is called I should be able to make a modified cable

To avoid any confusion, theforgottenking got the W700 from me (as non working of course, part of a trade), and I got it from wuj a few months ago, and he made it clear that it was in non working condition :)
Too many!
