I tried upgrading my CPU on my W500 and I think I got a bad x9100, so now I'm just over trying to push that machine further.

Check out The Boardroom for Parts, Mods and Other Services.
Correct, but it should always be noted in this context that the X230/T430/T/W530 series can be retrofitted with the 7-row keyboard via a fairly simple mod + EC patch.

Not with a few simple mods you don't.

I have the same concerns about screen size and real estate. My recommendation is to do as I did and construct a T420s or T430s with the 2560x1440 IPS mod (and Classic Keyboard mod in the case of the T430s). The laptop is smaller but much lighter with more screen real estate and improved viewing angles and quality. The WQHD screen is around $100, the adapter board is only available as a Chinese clone and goes for $60-70. A working T420s or T430s should be under $100. In total it's an around $300 investment but coming from a WUXGA T500 I am very pleased. The only thing you lose is some battery runtime compared to the older laptop with a healthy 9 cell.
