I see in the W701 Hardware Maintenance Manual that "thermal putty" is used between the fan assembly and the video card. My system runs hot and at some point I want to apply fresh thermal paste to the CPU and video card. I am concerned about replacing this putty to make sure that the video card is cooled properly. Does anyone knows what this entails and if I have to purchase a specific part as indicated in the document? (quoted below from page 102)
Note: In ThinkPad W701 and W701ds, thermal putty is used between the thermal device/fan and the video
card. The thermal putty is included in the video card FRU, but is not included in the thermal device/fan FRU.
If once you remove the thermal device/fan, you need to attach new thermal putty on the video card before
you reinstall the thermal device/fan. Order the thermal putty FRU when you service the thermal device/fan.
ThinkPad W700 and W700ds do not have this thermal putty.
Thanks in advance for any info!
Paul

Re: W701 thermal putty question
I have often wondered whether a small copper plate with thermal paste top and bottom would do a better job than thermal putty. The plate would have to be thick enough to fill the space.

Re: W701 thermal putty question
probably, there are also various third party thermal pads available, key is getting the correct size and thickness.
