Maximum wireless speed on W520?

#1 Post by helicopter » Tue Mar 24, 2020 10:36 pm

Hello,
I have a W520 (4270-CTO) running Windows 7. Network adapter is 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter. I'm using the Realtek driver 2023.1.1201.2014, dated 1/6/2015.

What's the fastest download speed for this network adapter? Seems like the wifi connection is the bottle neck for video conferencing, since my FIOS connection is supposed to be 200 Mbps, and I'm only getting about 24 Mbps down.

Thanks.

Those Realteks 1x1 are lousy cards.
Get a Dual Band Intel N6300, it will do up to 450 Mbps.
Unless you have a modded BIOS with whitelist removed, get an offficial Lenovo FRU 60Y3233.
If you have such a BIOS, also look at Intel AC-7260 https://www.ebay.ie/itm/303239756571
It can do up to 867 Mbps, and includes Bluetooth 4.0

Follow-up question- if a seller lists an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 (like this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-HP-572 ... SwXSRbRSzW), will it work with an unmodified BIOS? I have UEFI 1.46.
This listing mentions FRU P/N: 60Y3233, but the card just says Intel with their part number.
Thanks.

On the 2nd picture it shows the correct FRU.
Read the 3rd picture text.
Tell seller you want a Lenovo FRU card, he has them.

I've been happy with the speeds of my N-6300. No problems either.

Thanks for pointing out the info in those other photos. Somehow I missed that. I requested the Lenovo FRU. Will report back when I install it.

The Intel Ultimate N-6300 gives me about 49 Mb/s, about 2x as fast as I had before, though I also moved the router and adjusted the antennae. Was hoping for a better result.

Would the next step be to invest in a better router? This is just the one from the ISP (Verizon in the USA). I can get 300 Mb/s via Ethernet with it.

Get an El Cheapo T-Mobile TM-AC1900 and convert that back to its original ASUS RT-AC68U
https://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/
You'll be asked to do a number of captchas to get in, but it's well worth it.

Bought my TM-AC1900 for $51.41 in March 2018.
Currently you can get them for about $40, such as this: https://www.ebay.ie/itm/303544876212
Those were sold as a "T-Mobile Personal Cellspot", but are in reality "vasectomied" ASUS RT-AC68U.
Undo the vasectomy with the above conversion and be productive once more! 8)
I just put some black tape over the Cellspot label.
After that I also applied RMerlin firmware 384.13

Because we had a fairly large house, I also got a wifi range extender, the TP-Link RE450.
All our laptops have been upgraded to AC-7260 wifi cards.
My T440p currently is at 702 Mbps.
Couldn't be happier.
