Putting a W500 MOBO inside a W510?

#1 Post by lawgilbert95 » Thu Apr 02, 2020 4:23 am

I need some guidance here:

I have a ThinkPad W500 (TYPE: 4063-J51) in which the display is gone, but the motherboard is perfectly fine
I also have a ThinkPad W510 (TYPE: 4876-A11) in which the motherboard is gone, other components are fine

Hence, instead of wasting money repairing both, I was wondering if it might be possible for me to put the ThinkPad W500's motherboard into a ThinkPad W510 chassis

If yes, what modifications, if any are needed?
Where/how do I even start?

Thanks in advance to all for your help

Gilbert

IMO since you already have both laptops at hand, it's easier to check if the W500 board will fit.

The important questions are:

* do the screw holes line up

* are the keyboards interchangeable

* Will the W510 LCD work on the W500

and so forth.

A "no" in any of those questions will cast serious doubt on the feasibility of the translplant.

It won't fit at all. Everything is different. At best you can use the W500 with an external monitor, the W510 casing can possibly in the future house a motherboard from another T510, T520, W510, or W520, but note if the donor board is from a T510 or T520 you'll need a T510 or T520 heatsink.

I'm curious, why is it the heatsink/fan of the W520/30 cannot fit on the T520/30 motherboard? I was under the impression they were nearly identical save the GPU. Thanks.

On W-series heatsink the screws are equidistant from each other like a square. On T-series the heatsink screws are closer together longitudinally like a rectangle.

I uploaded images of those HSF's here. Those are for dGPU. The only possible compatibility I can see is between the W520 & the W530. Can anyone confirm?
