Camera on W510 (Windows 10) stopped working recently

#1 Post by Annorax » Mon Jun 15, 2020 1:32 pm

Hi all,

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 running Windows 10 Professional. I know it's not officially supported but it's been running great for a few years and everything works - until recently. Sometime between 6/10/20 and 6/15/20 the integrated webcam stopped working. The system acts like there is no camera installed. Going to Device Manager I see under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" an "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) and the latest event says:

Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\6&2bb760e&0&6 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

I thought it might be some Windows 10 update so I restored to the earliest restore point I had (6/8/20) which was when I know it worked but even then it still doesn't work. I've tried installing the Windows 7 camera drivers but they don't work. The Rollback button is grayed out.

The camera worked just a few days ago - is there anything I can do to get it working again?

Most likely M$ screwed up with their drivers (again).
Boot from a LiveLinux disk/USB and check if it works there.

Good idea - I booted into a Live Ubuntu USB install and tried Cheese but it also says there is no camera... which I guess means the camera hardware itself somehow broke. Is this common? I've never heard of something like this happening. Is this something an end user can replace?

I remembered that I still had the old Windows 7 hard drive lying around so on a hunch I put it in... and the webcam worked! So it must be a driver issue in Windows 10, but strange that Ubuntu couldn't use it either.
