W510 - cannot be upgraded to latest Windows 10

#1 Post by ThinkPadMiami » Fri Jun 19, 2020 5:32 pm

My W510s cannot be upgraded to the latest Windows 10 update. Any thoughts? Machines too old now and missing instruction sets? GPU?

The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. We’re offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn’t quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you’ll see the update available on this page. There’s nothing you need to do at this time.

I wouldn't sweat it. It's just less spyware they can load to your system.

I have a T510 too with Windows 10, but I haven't fired it up in months. I imagine when I do I'll be prompted for the update as well and it will also tell me my system is not up to snuff.

It could also be related to the massive problems ms has had with their latest bloat, er, um update. Lots of so called "compatibility blocks" with the latest version update

Excessive code is rampant today. Same with data obesity. With cloud computing returning us to the days of metered computing you would expect far more rationalization and streamlining of both.

With this recent ms fiasco, I don't want to go past the 1909 version update.

Why do you think COBOL has been used for over 60 years, and is still used today?
Absolutely NO bloat, properly tested before release.
Written by professional programmers who were way better paid than today.

Anything past 1GL/2GL/3GL is extremely inefficient by default because it has obsolescence built in.

The W510 can of course run version 2004, I've got mine running right now. MS is just rationing out how many users update because of previous issues :(
You can download the ISO direct from Microsoft.

I'm now on a clean install of 2004 after 3 years of periodic overwritten updates on my W-520 (which was a T-520 install and then a motherboard replacement to the W-520 board).

One thing I noticed is that you are now almost forced to use GPT partitioning if you partition your drive (I assume you are using an SSD, yes?) as Windows 10 *insists* on two Reserve partitions - one 50 MB, the other 500 MB. Therefore, 3 partitions of your own fails as this exceeds the 4 possible with MBR. If you like having the Reserved partition first under MBR, you are now out of luck. Your C: partition will be first, then the two Reserved partitions, then your D: and E; partitions. MS's "logic" is to allow "growth" of the 500 MB Reserved partition in future versions.

On the other hand, my continual updates accumulated so many Registry problems, it was just time to bite the bullet and do a complete clean re-install with incremented build images done with Acronis True Image.

Cool. Hopefully at some point in time it will resolve itself. Or I will install a more recent ISO once the installation is corrupted. It happens occassionally.
