W700ds Disk/RAM upgrade

#1 Post by Bashar » Sat Aug 22, 2020 8:22 pm

Hello Thinkpaders,
I have W700ds pulled from the dead and want to start using it again and wish to upgrade it with RAM, after reading online I noticed its max is 8GB RAM which i found on crucial.com, any better brands?

And the tricky question, when i was looking for W520 RAM upgrade docs used to say its max is 16GB yet i found some official reviews/vids from lenovo that says its max is 32GB ram (different than lenovo's service center staff were saying)

So back to W700DS, can it hold more than 8GB Ram? :D

So,any recommendation to replace its 500GB 7200 disk? any brand you recommend?

Best Regards,
Bashar

No, W700/W700ds only has 2 slots for PC3-8500/DDR3-10600 RAM.
But it also has a PM45 chipset, which does not recognise RAM-modules larger than 4GB, so you are "stuck" with max. 8GB RAM.
Replace the HDD with a 250GB/500GB/1TB Samsung EVO-850 or EVO-860.

There are two 2.5" disk drives. You can keep the current one and add an SSD. You can also add a third drive with an adapter in the ultrabay slot, or use the thinkmods expresscard to nvme that's coming out soon for two more drives.
