Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
I bought a japanese keyboard for my w701 in around december. it arrived about a month ago and I installed it but I didn't look very closely at it until now (I'm switching from the ol' Theseus-t510 to the w701)
it has a gray enter key, which isn't like anything I've ever seen on a thinkpad. I know some of earlier IBM laptops had some gray function keys, but I've never seen that on the (post-IBM-switch) lsptops, or on the enter key. Anyone know what's going on?\

Note: The keyboard is the same mechanical design as the t500/t400 KBs. Since i've put it in a 701 I'm putting it here.

Re: Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
At least one member has reported that gray Enter keys have been spotted on some rare X60s keyboards:

Re: Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
Interesting. Looks like the r60s is from around the same generation of keyboards, but is narrower than the t500 KB.
Besides the layout, it's different from my other t500-like keyboard. The new JP board has a shiny silver back, which seemed unusual to me but looks like some normal t500-like keyboards have it. I looked at some pictures on ebay and it looks like it's basically a normal silver-backed version except for the enter key.
No idea if it's helpful, but the ID no. on the back is 85T121 and it's model is MW-JP.
The other slightly unusual keyboard I have is the JP-layout T510 keyboard, which has a win8 style windows key. I've had a look around and haven't found what it came out of - all the other [WT][45][12]0 keyboards I've seen have the standard win7-style windows key.

Re: Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
This keyboard may be a knockoff. I learned some time ago that third-party keyboards of that generation are quite common.Hooloovoo wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 2:25 pmThe other slightly unusual keyboard I have is the JP-layout T510 keyboard, which has a win8 style windows key. Re: Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
I wonder if the keycap was ever swapped with one from a different laptop with the same KB manufacturer.
Re: Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
An image search for T510 Japanese Keyboard brings up a few pictures of keyboards with Win8 style key, so it is definitely more than a one-off.

Re: Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
I wasn't able to find pictures of a complete system with the win8 510 keyboard in it; doesn't mean they weren't made. If it is a knockoff, it's a pretty dang good one. it looks like Lenovo used win7-style windows keys through the 530. weird.
There is a reddit user who has a t41p with the same kind of grey key https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... _old_t41p/ which means it's probably not a one-off bad batch of purple plastic. No idea what it is though.
EDIT: There's one more visible difference with the jp t510 KB: the right-click/menu key also has a different icon from other JP keyboards (incl. my x201 and w701). This is also visible in the google search images. I can pull the KB and look at it (maybe compare to my other t510's KB?) later this evening.

Re: Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
Also interestingly the Windows key is a full-size cap instead of narrowed like most contemporary ThinkPads.
Re: Grey enter key on t500 keyboard
Well, the ribbon cable on the KB broke. When I got it it was already kind of folded. I've looked at the attachment of the ribbon cables, (the two parts of the KB matrix are sandwiching the gold-plated contacts on the ribbon cable), compressed by foam and screws) and it looks like all I need is a ribbon cable from a US keyboard -- one that has the same trackpoint mount as the japanese keyboard. I've ordered one and it should arrive in a few days.
