Does the W500 use mSATA SSDs?

#1 Post by TuXnSuits » Thu Sep 02, 2021 6:42 am

A while ago, I bought a W500 that's installed with a SATA SSD.
I took the laptop apart to clean it out and found a couple of spare slots that look like mSATA slots,
besides the one housing the Wi-Fi card.

So I wonder if its possible to plug an mSATA SSD in the W500 to use alongside your typical SATA drive.

Among the W series Thinkpads, only the W520 and W530 have support for mSATA SSDs.

Those slots on your W500 would be for the WWAN card, and possibly a Wireless USB card, a technology that didn't take off and became obsolete really fast.

You can use an ultrabay caddy and so use a 2nd SATA2 SSD.

The half-size slot can also take a Turbo Memory, another deprecated, obsolete, and ineffective feature. I actually had a 2GB Turbo Memory card in my T500, I managed to put a 1GB partition on it, but I also found it delayed bootup by a few seconds so I got rid of it.

A proof that software if often more important than hardware. Extra lanes aside, a modern M.2 is little more than a Turbo Memory module with BIOS support.
