Dead W520 Display

#1 Post by nandor » Sat Oct 23, 2021 8:59 pm

The LCD display of my W520 finally died today. I'd like to keep using it with an external monitor, but when I connect a display - either built-in VGA, docking station DVI or VGA - the external monitor stays dark. Is there a way to make the external the default display? Tried Fn+F7 without success. Thanks in advance.

If you're running Windows 7 or later, try the Windows key + P combo
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch

With the LCD dead, I can't get in to BIOS without getting the external monitor to work.

Once Windows boots, by guessing when the password prompt appears, I can get into Windows and then the external display becomes active. Still will have to figure out what to do to get into BIOS to disable the built-in by default.

Google for: w520.swf and save it in a sub-directory.
Assuming you already uninstalled Adobe flashplayer, download this (working!) version: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/f ... _debug.exe and save it in the same sub-dir.

The above gives you the W520 BIOS-simulator.
Double-click the .exe (takes a while) and select w520.swf
Or right-click w520.swf and select: Open with that .exe
Write down exactly how to get blindly to: BIOS/Config/Display/Boot Display Device and switch that to Analog VGA, then go to Restart and select Exit Saving changes.

It's all Arrow-keys, Escape and Enter in 'real BIOS-live', so count properly!
Enjoy!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
