Hard-Disk Drive (H.D.D. or S.S.D.) Larger than 2TB on ThinkPad W500 Laptop
Does anyone know whether a hard-disk drive (or S.S.D.) of capacity greater than two terabytes would be functional on the Lenovo ThinkPad W500 laptop? The machine runs Windows 10 Professional, 64-bit.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.

You would not be able to boot from a >2TB drive, but as a secondary drive (e.g., in the Ultrabay) it should work.

Do you know whether there might be any way to overcome the inability to book from a >2TB drive? Also, does anyone know what exactly causes the limitation?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Drives over 2TB require GPT partitioning. Windows only supports booting from GPT partitions on a UEFI BIOS, and W500 does not have a UEFI BIOS.
A workaround exists where the bootloader is placed on a second, MBR-formatted drive which then transfers control to the GPT-formatted main partition:

I haven't tested it, but it does not look very simple.
Another alternative is replacing the stock BIOS firmware with something like Coreboot/Libreboot. This may be even more complex, and Windows does not always play nice with it.
