W520 does not finish shutting down correctly

#1 Post by crux » Fri Dec 01, 2023 6:43 pm

I'm using a W520 running FreeBSD, that has also recently run Linux. But with both OS when you issue the shutdown -r now command it never finishes shutting down all the way no matter how long it sits and I have to do a hard reset by holding down the power button.

Then it may fire right back up when I turn it on, or I might have to do a hard reset many times before it starts the boot sequence.

Once it boots up it will run like it's supposed to. FreeBSD doesn't need rebooting as often as Linux so I have that installed now.

Please just say a prayer and let it be healed. Or advise me what to do.
W520 running OpenBSD 6.2
T43 running OpenBSD 6.2
T61 running FreeBSD 11.1 x's 2
X61 running FreeBSD 11.1
T400 running Solaris 11.3

This actually sounds like a hardware issue. Due to its age (12 years by now), some of the electronic components (capacitors, resistors, etc.) may have degraded enough to go out-of-spec, resulting in unexpected behavior.

I've personally encountered a 2nd-gen Core i3 laptop (same vintage as the W520) that turns itself on again after completing a shutdown.
