Anyone know the release date for this behemoth?

I'm also interested in the release date and full specs.

Surprised at the lack of talk concerning this model, dual drives are a first as well as the keyboard.

After a talk with a very helpful assistant at Lenovo.com I learned that the w700 will be available before the end of the month (August) and will be offered with Quad Core and the new Nvidia Quadro 3700.

I'll be waiting...

and that pic of the new keyboard that was circulating for some months is real. The w700 will be available with a mini-tablet as an option.

What do you mean a mini tablet?? Like a tablet version of the W700...? Wouldnt exactly be a tablet then would it??

Do you have any idea what the second touchpad is for? There are an awful lot of speculation that it is a CAD soemthing to do with digital....

You didn't understand what I was saying. There will not be a tablet version of the w700. The tablet I was speaking of is the "second touchpad" you are refering to.

A tablet like what designers use to replace the mouse when working with Photoshop.

Not a touchscreen type laptop.

It will be an option, welcomed by Designers on the move.

So the information I received was from Lenovo, not from a blog, making it oficial, not unconfirmed.

The GPU is the Nvidia Quadro FX3700m, not the 2700!

I was asking about the availability of Quad-cores and Hardware RAID on the w500 and I was answered that both would be available on the w700, to be released later this month (and not on the w500), I inquired further on the GPU it would house and I was told it would be the Nvidia Quadro fx3700m (I asked if it wasn't the 2700 and I was confirmed that it would be the 3700)

I think that picture is not the final version. I think that in the final version, the mini-tablet will be closer to the touchpad.

Yes, I saw it too, but I believe it is a typo repeated several times, because I specificaly asked the support staff 2x if the GPU would be the Nvidia Quadro FX3700m and they said yes, even when I asked if it wasn't the 2700m that was published in several forums and sites.

The HK site has a pic of a W700 with the logo in the normal position below the fingerprint reader.

I now what option means, but in your context above, does it mean that the tablet option is optional?? We can get it without it? Cuz i think i would hate it....

SO yes, it will be closer to the touchpad..and thinkpad logo will still be in its original location on Thinkpads.

About the Bluray I don't know but judging from the offer that comes with the w500 and being the w700 a 17" of the same cathegory, I believe they should be available with CDRW, DVDRW and BLURAY (at least I think that is the offer that will be on the w500 when the bluray drives become available).

The two images have differences in the position of the mini-tablet, being that one from Hong Kong the final one, and I was told it is an option, so you can order it without it.

to answer the question "where do you put your right palm?" I should say that it should be no trouble because when you have to type you will probably have the tablet turned off and when you are using it, you have a "stylus" (a plastic point pen) in your right hand (it's what you use with a tablet) and use the left to enter the command keys - Esc, Space, etc... At least that is how I have used this type of devices...

This tablet possibility seems to be a very nice add-on to designers...

I remembered another detail that the helpful Lenovo Support guy told me: The Nvidia Quadro FX3700M should be a 1gb DDR3 GPU (he told me it was a 1GB GPU before telling me it would be the 3700M). I believe that this should not be the only option, as it is the best mobile workstation GPU that can be fitted in a 17" (EXPENSIVE AND POWER HUNGRY), so the 2700M should also be offered as an option, just like at HP with the upcoming 8730W (that will probably offer both 2700M and 3700M).

I would be very surprised if a W series thinkpad offered only integrated graphics. It may come with the option for disabling the dedicated GPU to allow for better batery performances, but I think some high-end workstation GPU will be mandatory because of the market they are focusing on. I have read (rumors!) in other forums that HP will not release an 8730p (lower GPU version of the 8730w), so if you want that type of system I suggest you try the HP 8710p - it is a very well built 17" with a nice GPU - NVIDIA Quadro NVS 320M, that you should be able to find with a very nice price ($1000 for the basic config and $2000 for the top-end model including bluray). Prices should go down as October comes closer(estimated release date for the replacement). Be advised that this model doesn't come with WUXGA.

If you realy want only integrated graphics, you should demand a T700 from Lenovo

ha.. i was actually wondering if they would ever come out with a T700. Its not that i want integrated graphics...its just that i don't need the top of the line Nvidia GPU Card for my purposes..

I dont game nor do I do any sort of graphic intensive projects. The reason why i want the W700 is the screen real estate. Why W700 you may ask when there are so many others.. well, i like thinkpads and i know thinkpads are the [censored]. I can always go for Lenovo's Y730 but it looks like a toy. Thinkpads is just a plain beast!

Thinkpads are first and foremost business machines, and cater to the needs of corporate consumers. I doubt very much they will release a T700. The only reason to compromise weight and size is for more power. If you want a bigger screen, get an external display.

The W700 might be of great interest to me. A 17" widescreen Thinkpad. Oh yes. I assume the GPU will have 512MB of dedicated VRAM?

Edit: I just found it. 512MB it is. Nice! It says it has an anti-glare screen? Again with the screens. How good is anti-glare vs. the LG's?

Interesting that they have nothing on my favorite rumor...that T700 or W700 will be the first to have dual monitor! As in..a second LCD that slides out to the side.!

Noticed the HP 8710p offers a Wide-Viewing angle display - I doubt this is an IPS panel, maybe some kind of newer technology or are they referring to a LED display.

Back on track, I simply love this beast Thinkpad 17 incher.
Simply it would be a real desktop replacement machine. It looks really classy and gorgeous even though it's a monster.
Do anyone knows where to find hi res pics of this machine?

I think Lenovo have not made an announcement because indeed they fear the W700 will overshadow the T400/T500 series.

I don't know if to applaud or to criticize Lenovo with morphing the Thinkpad line into new series like the T400/T500 (not going with the traditional numbering), removing the p models, and also implementing the new W series which completely took over classic p models.
