Got my TP yesterday...

9 days from order to delivery here again..

order date: 5/26/2011
delivery date: 6/3/2011

The box was a bit untidy, but again it traveled all the way from China.
I wish the packaging was better, similar to a sony or apple. but again not a big priority.

Waiting for my 2x4GB RAM from newegg, it should arrive by tomorrow and then i will be up and running smoothly.
- G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ

btw. i noticed that the cover did not closed snuggly, the locking seemed a bit weak.

Ahh one more item, I got GOBI 3000 and while unpacking I saw a at&t sim kinda card.. but it is only a holder and no sim in it. what does that do.. ? and do i insert a sim for gobi 3000 to work.. ? and where do i enter that.. ?

With the latest shipping showing delivery to north of Chicago by late Tuesday, and the latest update was the W520 got to Lousiville, KY at 10:40 AM KY time, getting here by the end of the day is going to be interesting to watch.

I ordered the below configuration a week ago for $2,116.18. Just saw the Labor Day 20% off sale. Called my sales rep and he knocked off $200! I love Lenovo! The bad news, I'm back at the end of the shipping queue, but well worth it for the savings.

Rockafella - How accurate was your estimated shipping time? I just ordered a W520 today and I am on a bit of a tight timeframe. Thanks.

FWIW, I ordered my W520 on 9/12/11; the ship by date was 9/21/11.
It ended up shipping on 9/19/11 and I got it on 9/22/11.
Route was Shanghai > Anchorage > Louisville > Portland OR.

Ordered my W520 (sig) as a refurb on Lenovo's Outlet site. Ordered Sunday night (11/13) and arrived this morning (11/15). I did pay the expedited shipping cost, clearly well worth it!

Did not order my W520 from Lenovo directly, bought it from TigerDirect instead. Ordered it last week Wednesday and got it last week Thursday to upgrade my W500 (the warranty expired last week so I decided to replace it). I have a feeling the W500 was a higher quality product somehow (finishing, material, speakers) but obviously the W520 is a lot faster with Windows 7 than the W500 with Windows Vista.

It worries me more and more as I continue to explore these forums and confirm that an important number of folks that remain loyal to ThinkPads all seem to say that newer models have less impressive finishing & materials.... sure the specs and performance improve, but I just dont get why Lenovo seems to be willing to play games and (apparently) cut corners with materials & finishing quality. IBM left them with an Icon brand with a loyal following... if Lenovo has to cut corners to keep profitable then there is something fundamentally wrong with their business model.....

I hope I just worry tooo much....

They want to grow very fast and that is why they need to cut prices. In order to cut prices and still make money they are cutting corners obviously. You should never worry: in the end it is just a piece of machinery.

Just received a refurbished W500 (4061-B13) from the IBM contractor purchase program. I am impressed, it's a very nice machine. It came with 4GB of memory, Core 2 Duo T9400 (2.53Ghz) Win7 Pro (32bit), 9 cell battery, and the lower resolution 1680x1050 display. Plus, they tossed in a 1 year extended warranty for free. Not bad for just a bit over $400US. I really like the high resolution display and the discreet ATI graphics. The keyboard though....it's not as good as the keyboard in my T60P. This one requires more effort to press the keys and they make more noise. Still though....this laptop does circles around my old Intel Atom powered Lenovo S12 Netbook. :D

Out the door, just under $2300 with tax and upgraded UPS shipping. Due to ship out on 3/27.

In case you're wondering, yes, I deliberately only got 4gb memory. Will be swapping that out with 32gb DDR3-1600 to be ordered later today from Newegg.

(updated 3/21 with actual Lenovo BOM sheet)
3/22: Got email confirmation that my W520 was being shipped! So much for a 3/27 shipping date; I should *receive* the laptop by that date!
3/23: Got tracking code, it's going to be delivered later today! Crazy!
3/23: It's here!

Yes, I have been jaded by (purported) technocrats. Almost as jaded by the tech itself.
