W500 arrived . . DVD/CD drive noise/problems

All is good except my CD/DVD drive is noisy. Kinda like the CD is scraping against something. I have removed it and reinstalled it but at lower speeds it makes alot of noise and at the highest speed it is near quiet.

It reads my software disks except my MS Office. The green light on the drive just blinks and does not spin up the disk and start the install. After about 45 seconds it stops blinking.

Anyone else have this problem?

If it persists can I just have them replace this drive or does the whole laptop need to go in?

I believe you can have only the CD/DVD drive replaced, no need to replace the whole machine. I don´t have W500 but problems like what you describe usually happen to me when the CD or DVD media fails for some reason. It can happen even if it has worked properly before. Besides, the newer CD/DVD drives seem to be somewhat pretentious :)

Thanks. It worked for a few software installes but the noise is horrible and now it wi not even recongnise that a cd is installed.

UPDATE:

Called Lenovo and told them my problem at about 7pm EST. The guy was nice and said they would have a new optical drive out to me wioth in two days.

It was delivered the very next morning at 9:30am! Pulled out the old drive and inserted the new and all is perfect now. Dropped defective unit in the box and slapped the provided lable on the box, called DHL and they picked it up before lunch!

This is good!
