Problems caused by Lenovo system update?

Only yesterday I became a proud owner of w500 (t9400)l. But i encountered quite a few problems with the end result being = shipping it back to the store.
I want to make some things clear before I get the laptop back.
The Thinkpad stopped responding after I installed the system updates, which are offered through the "lenovo system updates" service. As far as i recall the updates i checked and installed were the BIOS update, ATI video card driver update and some other drivers.
The system wanted to reboot and everything went fine... after reboot BIOS was updated successfully (to my knowledge). Then I turned the computer off.
Next morning I tried to turn the computer on but it didn’t boot. It didn’t freeze during BIOS or Vista startup - it just didn’t start. The disk, BIOS, everything was still, only the battery light indicator was on.
System update seems the most obvious reason for this error... I read somewhere that the system could become unstable if you update BIOS first and install the driver update BEFORE updating the system bios. Could that be the problem?
Did anyone encounter the same problems with Lenovo system update? Is it necessary to update BIOS and other hardware drivers?
