I have an odd folder labeled with 28 characters & numbers, which is first in the list under drive letter C:

Answered my own question and solved the problem. Must be that Roadrunner over there on the left....
The folder was generated when I used Microsoft Update to install SP3, for XP Pro. What a waste of time that was. Spent several hours as even though I have a fast broadband feed, it's all the code that our friends at Microsoft built into that rev. After finding that folder, in first place just above of documents and settings which is normally first in the list it really bugged me, as I simply didn't know what it was. Lots of searching proved fruitless, so I thought I would just re image the drive as SP2. Upon completing that, it confirmed that indeed the folder was created by the ever so clever (not) MS SP3 rev.
Oh, and by the way... what I did find out while searching is that Lenovo does not support SP3 on machines that are shipped with XP Pro SP2.
