I currently own a T60P but I'm in the market for a new, more powerfull machine with a better screen.

When do you think we are going to see a new 500 or 700 ?

If it's around September, then I could wait ...

Your wait may be a very long one. I just don't see them refreshing either of those two for some time. However that said I could certainly be wrong. Personally I really like my W500, far more than I anticipated as I'm spoiled with my T60p which is a good as the day I bought it new from Lenovo. I got the W500 having set my expectations low knowing it would be a regular display. However now that I have it and have become used to how fast it is, and the fact that the display is indeed quite nice, it will at least serve its purpose to use as an alternate to my T60p to prolong its life. After all there is simply nothing like its flexview screen.
.
Cheers...

You will likely not see a better screen. The only thing they brag about with these newer screens is that they are wide. The W500 and W700 are not old enough to expect something new in the near future. with the "new economy" sales are down and so would be R&D and introduction of new hardware. Lenovo is having to cut their prices just to sell what they got.

The next big bump, if you want to call it that, will be the introduction of Windows 7. Maybe some new hardware then. Lenovo is not a cutting edge inovator. Their W500 series still does not use led lighting!

I did install a new Samsung 256gb Sata2 SSD in my W500 and it is MUCH faster. The Windows logo just blinks quickly on boot, I smile everytime I stat it up. I used to use suspend or sleep but now can sut down and restart so quick, I see no need to do so.

Greg,

your SSD speed is great news. From what I read recently W7 will be released to be more compatible with SSD than is any current MS OS.

For my experience this is 'deja vue all over again' ... in the late '80s I had a ROM-RAM laptop (HP-Portable PLUS) with DOS 2.11. A 3-finger salute (reboot) took about 2 seconds ... and battery life was about 8 hrs. A big app was 128K. Windows Word 1.1 was WYSWYG, sort of .. but document formating tools were excellent for the times. LOTUS-123 was the rage ... and every supplier was respectful of Big Blue for fear of stepping on their toes.

Hi Frank,

On my 3rd week with the SSD and really am enjoying it. Only thing warm on the bottom of my laptop is on the left side where the CPU lives. The hard drive side is stone cold. This is going to be the future for sure and will make everyone happy when the sizes of these SSD drives inclrease and the prices go down. Both will happen soon!

From what is known, Intel will be releasing Nehalems for laptops in Calpella platform arround Q3. Give some time for OEMs to ship laptops based on those chipsets and refresh should be here in Q4. This should also coincide with Windows 7 release. Depends how big the refresh will be: Will it be another T6 series-like (T60, T61 and T/W500 are very similar) or will it be a redesign (like going from T43 to T60). Nehalem and Windows 7 are worth waiting for ~6 months if you can live on your current laptop untill then.

I'll start saving for a new notebook now and see arround autumn how things stand.

I'm very skeptic on better screen than T60p.

Do you await to see the all-new USB3 interface in the new for Q4 2009 ThinkPad W series models, too?

I concur with the suggestion of waiting for Win 7 & Nehalem.

As far as the 4:3 (or any other format) IPS Flexview as on my T60p, we might as well drop that topic as it's a thing of the past. Lenovo has made it very clear they are _not_ returning to that stellar offering.

Cheers

I just upgraded from my beloved T60p to a W700. Does the W500 also come with the Pantone color sensor?? Since I'm losing IPS, I'd like to get as close as I can..lol...thanks! ;)

Brilliant Move.....Three Cheers!

I love my new W700, it's exceeded my expectations by a mile. And it's not that I didn't think it would be a good model but I must admit I didn't care for the offset Keyboard. Now that I've become used to it, I'm highly satisfied.

To your question, no the Pantone sensor is unique to the 700 only.

Congratulations... enjoy your new ThinkPad!

A few months ago I upgraded from my A31p's to W500 ... and loaded it to the max. The W700 for me was just too big, except as a desktop with some portability. The bigger screen of the W700 is impressive ... but than I have the DELL 3008WFP (1600x2560, wide gamut) an all-around great monitor ... now around $1200.

I have hardware calibrated both, the internal and external monitors .. so whether on the dock of away I have a calibrated screen for my CS3 and video editing and viewing.

As for new models in the neighborhood of my w500 ... I do not expect anything dramatic but merely small step evolutions over the next 12-18 months. However, I pre-ordered W7-64 and will upgrade to SSD ... hopefully 500GB by year's end ... evolutionary updates as well.
