Vista

I have all kinds of weird problems when I have the reseller downgraded my machine to XP. Finally I decide to have a try with Vista, and all the problems disappeared.

I guess the machine was well tested under Vista, and never well tested under XP. I posted another article indicate that W500 is even slower than T42, well, that's because it runs on XP. It runs much faster on Vista.

I am not a big Vista fun, that's why I asked to be downgraded to XP. But looks like MS found a way to push me to Vista. Now I installed Vista Business 32 bit. I wanted 64 bit, but I feel there might many hassles on 64 bit, especially I am a developer, I am afraid that software run well on my machine may not run well on other machines, so I will stay with 32 bit.

When windows 7 comes, I might still stay with 32 bit unless I found time to upgrade my server to 64 bit too.

So, guys, maybe you should go for Vista!

Yes, some time passed since Vista was released and I would say it got pretty mature. Most of the software also had a chance to keep up and works well in this somewhat modified environment. I moved to Vista couple of months ago and never had major problems with it. I kind of like it, the looks too.

Speaking of looks, if you want, you can make Vista look a lot like XP. Turn off all the visual effects, change the theme to Windows classic and optimize the settings for performance.

You should have access to all of them. I am an IT professional and we have access to x86 and x64 builds of everything (including Windows Server) for testing. I would expect a developer to have the same or better, no?
