LCD Panel of W500

T400 & T500 have 2 type of LCD Panel: Samsung & LG. I read some reviews and they said that Samsung is worse than LG, everybody who has a Thinkpad with Samsung LCD Panel always changes it to the one made by LG.
I wonder if it was the same with W500? Does it have 2 types of LCD Panel: Samsung & LG?

Yes Lenovo uses multiple suppliers for display panels in most models. I have a WUXGA in one of my W500's that is LG. My other is a WXSGA+ by Samsung, however I do not find it to be as objectionable as some people claim. It is a very good display. Of course I must put in the disclaimer of it not being as good as the IPS UXGA in my T60p, since everyone is so insistent on comparing the two. Don't get me wrong, I would like Lenovo to get serious and provide us with better displays, yet that said we cannot bring back the IPS so there's no point in agonizing over it. Also I would be the first to say if these displays were bad, and they are not. I hope this helps you.

I'm not sure but it appears that both supply each resolution. I have a second W500 int he SXGA+ which just arrived yesterday, I checked it this morning and it's LG.

Do you see it's better than Samsung?
Could you send me your Part No of that LG?
I've ordered a W500 & I know this use Samsung LCD Panel (Part no. 44C1924) in. I wonder if I change it or not?

My personal preference is the Samsung. The colors are warmer, the color depth is better, and it responds to color correction adjustments the best. I would highly suggest the Samsung.

I'm sorry I do not have the part number with me, as I'm out on appointments now and don't have that information with me.

Cheers...

you see text in samsung clear? i see in T400 LG LCD displays text more clearly than Samsung.
I call Lenovo sales team to ask about the LCD Panel with W500 I've ordered & talk them that I want to change it to LG. What a [censored] team! They don't know anything about what they sell. I had to call 4 times to ask just 1 question. i called many times today, but everytime, i have different kind of answer. The last man I talked to said that "no option to change, so don't have to call back"..what a [censored] team...

Yes the text, icons and cells, like in MS Office Excel are all very clear, well defined and bright. You will not be disappointed.

I usually work in Photoshop & 3dMax and the accuracy of color is one of the problems i worry

I do a wide variety of work, a lot of 3D design, photo editing, manipulation, etc with various apps like Maya, Photoshop CS4 and Solid Works. My W500 with it's new MemoRight GT 2.5" 128GB SATA SLC SSD, is a rocket. The color accuracy is good right out of the box, then once you do some color correction work it's excellent. Contrast is great, color depth and temps are good.

Side by side with my like new (just unboxed with only 40 hours on it, as I was saving it as a spare) T60p IPS UXGA Flexview, the W500 is actually brighter by about 15%. I was quite surprised and pleased given all the negatives that people tend to write about it. However that said, I wonder how many actually own and use them. I'm very picky, and believe me as much as I prefer ThinkPads I would be the first to reveal if it was an unsatisfactory display. Could it be better? Of course... at todays pace of development any brand of laptop could be better. But I will add that compared to my new Unibody MacBook Pro, the W500 wins hands down.

Finally as far as Samsung vs. LG, it's really personal preference as the LG tends to be extra bright (even though they both have the same nits ratings) and is not quite as warm as the Samsung.

Cheers...

OK, let's get one thing straight here: for WUXGA panel on a W500 there's only one FRU, which is 44C9614. For the WSXGA+ there are two FRU numbers, but the suppliers are NOT specified.

I'm dead certain that the panel on W500 that I'm typing this on is a Samsung WUXGA+ since I had the exact same one on my T61p, and hated every square nanometer of it. However, does anyone have actually reliable source of information that the other WSXGA+ panel is made by LG, and the corresponding FRU?

I'm glad you're saying what you're saying, fellow BB Bold owner. I'm going to order a W700 (almost ordered it today), so may I know how like you're liking your W500. I see we have one of the same Thinkpads, too (UXGA IPS; see sig. :thumbs-UP: ).

The Bold, for example, is a stunning display to me, and so is IPS of course. Overall, how do you find the build quality, screen (duh) of the W series. The 400NIT is just plain brighter, or does it do anything else?

Take care, and thank you! ;)

I'm very happy with my W500. The build quality is very good and the display is an excellent one for a normal (non-IPS) panel. Not long ago I used a friends W700 while he was away on vacation. It was the 400nit version. The brightness was very impressive, yet far too bright for me as I never work outside so it's overkill in my case. However other than that, I really was impressed with it. Thus I ordered one for myself with the 200 nit display. I've had it just over a week and it's every bit as nice as the W500 as far as build quality is concerned. I'm running XP on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. Since I'm testing Win 7 on another ThinkPad and like it, I will eventually install the finished version on the W700 in place of XP. I decided to skip Vista altogether.

Today, when i use EVEREST to view hardware of W500, I see some information that makes me confuse. The manufacture date of monitor is 2005. My w500 was just ordered in 05/2009. Is this an abnormal issue, isn't it?

Well, LCDs age even when not used, although to a far lesser extent, but I was serious...

One of these days I'll finally finish my W500 review and you'll get to see what a "new" LCD looks like when compared to the "old" ones and OMG it's not pretty...

 Thanks for saving me a response to this lol. That's precisely how I feel (see sig.), so now I don't have to respond...And you have a Bold???...And you're from Calif??? ... This is getting weird. Do you live in the Hollywood Hills?? THAT would freak me out...

Is the W500 (the WUXGA one) nice and bright??

You could say it's bright, but there's nothing nice about it. Colour reproduction and viewing angles are horrible.

No one really has a panel in a new laptop that was manufactured in 2005.
The reason why this is reported, is that Lenovo does not update the manufacture date of the LCD in the EDID situated in an EEPROM on the display, so that it matches with the label on the back of the LCD.
In all displays that i know of, the EDID indicating date is always set to 00 and 0F, which is the week and year of manufacture. The year of manufacture is the offset from 1990, so it would be 1990+15=2005 and week would be 0.
The panel itself is manufactured at another date, and likely MUCH newer than 2005.
