setting up dual hard drive.. extend OK between SSHD?

#1 Post by bojangles » Wed Aug 12, 2009 10:05 am

I have the 80GB primary SSHD with my operating system Vista 64, and a second 250GB (5400rpm) HDD in the second spot, I also have a new 200GB (7200rpm) available.
I would like to extend the SSHD wisth one of the drives.
Will windows (and most installed programs) continue to run quickly since it is installed on the fast SSHD?

will the RPM difference of the second drive affect performance much?

Please let me know if you have any experience with extending solid state drives?

I have two partitions on my solid state drive - C:\ with the operating system and installed programs, and D:\ with my documents and music.

That works well, and is very fast, as one would expect.

I also have a regular mechanical drive in the Ultra Bay with movies, and other big files. The movies launch very quickly with only a second or two delay. So, yes...when you call for a movie from the mechanical drive, the solid state drive still operates very fast, which tells me that the slow response has always been due to the operating system on a mechanical drive.

I do not want to partition the SSHD, it is only 80 GB and with the Lenovo stuff it is reduced to just over 60GB. after Windows and Office and a few other things are installed there is only 10GB left.

I would like to use the windows file system to store doccuments, music, video, photos, etc, but I dont like having two sets of folders with those names, not to mention everything that you install always wants to do it on C drive. I want to extend the SSHD across the entire second hard drive.... I also will put the third hard drive in the ultrabay, and call it D:

Since I have no experience with what you are wanting to do, I can't advise.... heck, just try it and see what happens. "Success is the territory of the bold."
