W700 USB overcurrent, and Bios update not working, and more

#1 Post by bojangles » Wed Sep 02, 2009 6:27 pm

I have a newish ( one month old ) W700 2757CTO (2.8 - 4G - Vista64) and some problems that tech help can not resolve. Before sending to repair outlet, I hope to get some answers here.

First of all, when I try to run system update, it tells me that I must install critical updates for rescue and recovery (patch and patch2) when i say OK, it downloads,, then says the package did not install.. with not further options - what gives

Next, whenever I start the machine from being shut down, just after the thinkpad screen... it beeps and tells me there has been an error - USB overcurrent. and the machine stops booting. must press esc to continue. Lenovo at a loss for this.

They suggest to update Bios... I am at version 1.57 from the lenovo update site, it tells me that I must burn a CD to do bios update. I made the disc from the downloaded *.iso file, and when I reboot... (yes the boot sequence is OK) the machine spins the disc... then freezes... never doing the update.

Last symptom of all this is that when I am booting up, and the thinkpad screen is showing and the message to press the blue thinkvantage button is there.. I can press the button till I am blue in the face but it never enters the recovery console.......

Not impressed. so far..

1.) Install System Update 3 manually;

2.) Remove all external USB devices, undock the thinkpad. Do you still get the error?

3.) Do any bootable CD's work? I suspect you did not burn the .iso as an image.

4.) Reinstall Rescue & Recovery and apply the latest updates to it after you install System Update 3.

Is this a factory build, or did you 'mess' with it? Uninstall anything?

Other bootable discs do work, but the ones I made dont work.
I am fairly certain that I burned a proper disc.. there are not than many options on the burner program, it recognises the iso file and walks me through it with a sucessful message at the end.

has anyone been able to get the latest bios done?

Well, I don't have 'Creator business edition' , but I do have Roxio Creator 2009. In that pgm you go into data, then select 'burn disc image', then browse to the location for the bios .iso file and choose it. Select your burner as the destination drive. Put in CD-R and click on go.
