are these IPS panels? out of the new arrandale based machines in T and W series which ones have the IPS panels? any 16:10 IPS panels in 14" form factor?

The only ones left with IPS panels are the tablets. My guess would be the 95% gamut screens are like the high nit WUXGA screen offered on the W700. It's better than your average panel, but not as good as an IPS. As far as I know there's been no 14" IPS panels. If someone offered one, I'd have it already.

aspect ratio aside its odd thinkpad display is going south quality wise over the years.

New 95% gamut display sounds interesting for me.

Afaik the W700 hast the top display in market today: 72% gamut (sRGB perfect), 400 nits and 10bit processing.

It's the only one with 10 Bit?

I am interested if that new 95% display also shares 10 bit processing? If so it should be good for profiling to Adobe-RGB AND sRGB. Maybe... The option for Xrite sensor let me hope...

Well, at least this will raise the profile of IPS panels.

I hate to say it but with a quad i7 and a 15" or 17" WUXGA IPS no glare screen, my love affair with Thinkpads will be over. Thanks so much Lenovo for taking an incredible brand slowly into the toilet.

This is purely speculation AFAIK - no one has mentioned upcomming MBP's with IPS displays ?
While I will be the first to regret, that Lenovo decided to turn their back on the beautiful IPS displays they used to offer, on the other hand I consider the current crop of TN panels only as a temporary problem. Maybe IPS displays will find their way back into new Thinkpads if other brands start to offer them. New and better technology also is constantly beeing made, so perhaps in a not too distant future we will have superior oled displays - I dont know.

However, the shortcommings of the apple laptops has not really been on displays, IPS aside, but on overall ergonomics, poor (as in F...... POOR) service, heat issues, built issues etc etc. The list goes on and on and I dont think its fair to say that Lenovo are flushing the Thinkpad line in the toilet! For example I rank my W700 among the very best Thinkpads ever and perhaps more than any other laptop ever made it shows how dedicated Lenovo works with what they have to provide us with the ultimate Roll Royce among laptops. As long as this dedication is reflected in their product lineup, I'll happily skip even an IPS display for a couple of years.

What makes this W700 great is the hardware which every other manufacturer has access to. IBM would have done their part to make the design a bit more elegant and sturdy. Lenovo is making the thinkpad "feel" like cheap plastic. Also the track point buttons were not great with the last few generations but the latest (on the new machines) is really horrible. I still prefer the trackpoint buttons on the T43, X32, A31, etc.

I changed my W700 to a keyboard from a T61p on day one - so yes of course you are right. The installed keyboard was flexi and terrible but I havent really been thinking about it, because the problem was solved with the exchange.
I do not agree that the W700 feels plastic or of a low quality. I have had my share of Dells and HP's as work computers, enough to say that I would never ever even consider buying one for my own money, disregarding that the hardware innards may be the exact same. By the way, despite all the power packed in my W700 it is cooler running than any Thinkpad I can remember having owned before it. Oh, all this little things that make up a love relationship hehe. Its ok if you dont feel the same, I guess we all just have different priorities.
