fingerprint reader error

#1 Post by cristidorgo » Mon Feb 01, 2010 12:03 pm

I have a w500 Lenovo Thinkpad and I installed win 7 on it. I also installed fingerprint reader's driver, but when I tried to setup my fingerprints an error was displayed: Cannot communicate with sensor. Please confirm the sensor is ready.
Need help. Thank you.

Here's the solution that worked for me. I have a W500 I did a clean install of Windows 7 from Lenovo and was seeing the same problems trying to get my fingerprint reader to work.

Here's what I did:

1) Follow these instructions to disable automatic driver installation in Windows: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-ti ... ows-vista/

2) Uninstall the Lenovo fingerprint software

3) Uninstall the Authentec True Suite software.

4) Open the Device manager and uninstall the Authentec driver

5) Reboot

6) Re-enable Automatic driver installation. If you don't, the Lenovo SW won't install the driver.

7) Install the Lenovo fingerprint software.

8) Reboot

Thanks for the tip jstonier. This works great. Was pulling my hair out trying to figure out the problem. guess the driver that Windows loads is not compatible with the Lenovo fingerprint software. Thanks again!

Hi jstonier

Thank you for this solution. I ran 'ThinkVantage System Update' on my W500 4062-2XG (Win7-x64) and after that had the problem as described above.

Also the 'action center' indicated an 'Install your USB modem driver' problem. Not sure if this is related, but as the fingerprint reader works with USB... Anyway I misclicked the message and had no chance to take care of it in the action center!

By the way I found the 'Lenovo Fingerprint Software' here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... D=DS012806 - but this might change over time. So it is better to do a Google search for 'Lenovo Fingerprint Software'.

I posted your solution to all sites I searched for my problem (with reference to this thread).

I tried the method jstonier suggested. It still says it's not communicating. I'm using a T430 thinkpad running Windows 7 64 bit.

Can someone else give me any ideas?

Both the solution from jstonier and the tip from TerraD solved the issue for me. I would like to pass on that you may have to run 'ThinkVantage System Update' after installing the Lenovo fingerprint software (jstonier's step 7). After I did that and rebooted again, I noticed two separate fingerprint enrollment windows; the newer one is the 'ThinkVantage fingerprint software' which seems to detect the sensor better.

If you've tried to install the driver for the fingerprint reader but it says that the device cannot be found, check the following:
1. BIOS settings
2. loose connector (you need to partially disassemble the laptop to check the connector of the fingerprint reader. Consult the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your Thinkpad model.
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts
