No W700 on thinkpad website

It appears that Lenovo must be close to releasing their new W710. The W700 is gone and no longer configurable on Lenovo's website. It has been this way for a couple of days now. They seem to release laptops on Friday so perhaps they will release the W710 tomorrow.

The 710 Model has already been released. It was on the site for two days then pulled. There is an over stock of 700's I'm told (by Lenovo). That said take it with a grain of salt as Lenovos site is typically filled with errors of omission, wrong prices, and general inconsistencies. It's best to check it twice per day if you are serious and ready to buy. If present history is any indication I expect to see the 710 and 700 listed concurrently. The same as the 500 & 510 is now. The first time they pulled the 510 (which I was interested in) I called three times in one day, and two out of three sales rep told me they were sold out and would not be back on the site for five or six weeks. The third rep told me eight weeks. Good thing I was vigilant and did not believe them. Just two days later they were back on the site with a 9 day build time. I ordered mine it was built in 5 days, and now it sits trapped in customs for five days so far. No word as to when they will be released. One thing about Lenovo, its almost like gambling in Vegas....heh!

Interesting. I guess you know more than I do. Can you tell me if they went to the Nvidia Quadrol FX 3800 video card in the W710??? I'd be curious to know.
Sounds like I'll have to check the website frequently. Thanks for the advice. Meanwhile I'll keep waiting. They must have listed the W710 on the very two days I didn't bother to check lenovo's website because I've been all over them like a dirty sock!

Yes you must have just missed it. I'm a huge ThinkPad advocate, and have been for years. It is that very fact which causes me to be so vociferous now regarding their major shortcomings. The difference is night and day. I'm not one to complain or pick them apart. But the issues of late are so blatant and ongoing its just not the way a company of their scale should be operating.
.
I don't know if you've seen my other post talking about how I have a T510 that has been sitting in customs with many others, just waiting for Lenovo to provide the proper documentation for them to be processed. And they've been stuck there for the last week! Mind boggling!

I ordered a W700 this past Wednesday, 2/3/10. I'd configured it and saved the order on Monday. When I called the CSR back on Wed. to pay for it, he told me the W700s had been pulled from the website because of inventory issues with the screens. Said something about March deliveries(mine appeared to make it under the wire because of the 'save' on Monday, but I'll see if the estimated ship date of 2/13 actually holds up or not).
We didn't discuss W710 models, but everything he discussed led me to believe that the W700s will be back, once they straighten out the inventory issue(s).

So they are not discontinuing the w700ds? I am just counting down the days till I can afford to buy one and now I hear that the w710 is on its way. What is the major different between the two models. I am still looking for something with dual screens and a docking station that I can connect two monitors to when I am not on the road. Are they still going to have this for the w710?

I visit Lenovo daily, as I am waiting for the release of the W710 as well. I hope the DisplayPort won't have the audio issue again, and hopefully we'll see at least an LED-backlit screen, such as the one on the W510, and as opposed to the W500's CCFL LCD. I guess IPS is too much to ask, and I'm not so sure that I want a MacBook Pro after playing with Mac OS X 10.6.2 on my W700, and after fiddling around with a 17" WUXGA MBP at an Apple store. How is OS X the "best" operating system in the "world"? lol...Obviously, every OS maker will claim that but still. It makes me appreciate Windows even more.
I'm excited about the W710 now.

Do we have any additional information about it beyond the FCC leak?

My ship date got shoved back to 3/9/10. No email, no nuthin', just showed a new date when I checked the order status page yesterday(which was 2/13/10, the 'original' ship date). In view of numerous posts on this forum, I'm wondering when the W700 will -ever- ship.
Briefly considered ordering a stripped down W700 from the outlet store, until I researched posts on THAT...not so good...am currently wondering if I oughta shop stripped version on ebay to tide me over. I want/need some new iron soon, don't know if I can or should wait. Can't test some tweaks I've made until Tuesday, so am mulling the entire situation over.
Shouldn't be this hard to cough up $real$ and get sumpin' shipped when it's originally promised. Somewhat deceptive.

At this point, I would cancel the order, and starting in two weeks, put an order in for a brand new W701.

The W700 should come down in price dramatically over the next few months, but right now, in my opinion, it is the worst time to buy a soon-to-be refreshed Thinkpad when it is still expensive. If you need one fast to tide you over, mine is for sale (see sig.).

Yeah, I thought about that(cancel, get something else to tide me over), but there are several items in the W700 platform architecture that interest me. So, I'll buy one now, add another one or two to the arsenal over coming months and be in good shape. The W701 is likely going to be more $$$ than I can afford(or need), and even though it'll probably have some more bells and whistles in comparison to the W700, those bells aren't likely to matter to me.
I also considered the W500/W501 line, but the W700 model is the only Lenovo laptop that has the specific components that interest me at this time. Otherwise, I'd be buyin' some laptops like the one you have for sale
Btw, just got off the phone w/Lenovo, checking my order with some guy from India. He indicated earlier shipping than the revised(3/9) status page and, get this, said sumpin' about "I'll put in a request to PRIORITIZE your order." HA! Probably a line they're told to lay on the people that call in to complain about delays...

Yes, unfortunately, you're absolutely right. I love it when they read from their script in response to a specific question by the customer. What a joke. Try this: Call back and follow the voice prompts to "Place a NEW order". Those calls end up in the good ol' United States...North Carolina, to be exact. They have the same information that the Indians have, and they will help you regarding your order status as well. If you end up liking a particular rep., ask him or her for their extension. That way, you can key it in, and as opposed to the Indians, they will actually call you back when you leave voicemail for them.
As for the W700, I'm actually not asking that much, considering everything it has, which would make it a $5k+ CTO on Lenovo's website (if they still had a Bluray burner drive to offer lol). I'm letting mine go for less than half that!

Awesome! Did you order an SSD? I just got a brand new Toshiba 128GB SSD. I also have an Intel X25-M 80GB, also brand new, and Generation 2. The date of manufacture on the Toshiba is 1-15-2010. Wow, how do they get those shipped so far and fast? lol...

According to another poster, it looks like we finally have some answers.
The W701 or W710 will be released on February 25th.
The graphics card will be the updated Quadro FX 3800 (128 core) and 2800 (96 core) series.
It will have 4 mem slots like the W510 so it will support up to 16 Gigs.
It will support 500 GB hard drives.
I'm interested to see it.

I have a brand spanking new NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700. Do we know as to whether or not it will be compatible with the W701? I guess I'll be selling it if it's not. How much can I ask for this? This was a $700 option as recently as December.

Check eBay (but don't forget to put the "M" at the end of 3700M, otherwise you're talking about the desktop card). About $380-430 for Buy-it-Now at the moment.
Note that the edge connectors of the 3700M and 3800M look different:

So if those gaps in the edge connectors are for keys, then no, they won't be interchangable. Notice that the W700's other graphics option, the 2700M, has edge connector gaps in precisely the same positions as the 3700M:
