This worked for me on w500, but it keeps showing 1280x800. when I put the resolution in manually, it says test failed and does not work.
any ideas?

I just tested it with my W510 and Series 3 Plus dock and I'm having the same problem. Dual-link resolutions (beyond 1900x1200) can't be enabled out the Series 3+ dock. DVI
Look at this page:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4TPJF4
You appear to have the "Thinkpad Mini Dock Plus Series 3" (part 433810U) and I have the "Thinkpad Mini DOck Plus Series 3 for Mobile Workstations" (part 433820U). The only difference, however, is the power supply. The 433820U comes with a 135W power supply for the W510.
Either way, the DVI is documented to be Single-link only. Were you really able to get 2560x1600 (dual-link) out of the dock with your W500?
EDIT: I removed mention that I also tested the DisplayPort output and was limited to 1920x1200 as well. That will always be the case when using a non-active (passive) DisplayPort-to-DVI cable, like I did. I don't have an active DisplayPort-to-DVI cable, or a DisplayPort monitor, to test. So it may still be possible to get beyond 1920x1200 resolution on DVI using either an active cable or DisplayPort monitor.

Never got it to work. Had a great conversation with a level 3 support guy at lenovo and we concluded it will not work. It does work perfect on the w500 dock to the dvi port. The cable I have says "Dual Link DVI Cable" and that drives the 2560x1600 perfectly. I returned (sadly) the W510 and am awaiting the next Lenovo rev someday. I can't live without my big monitor.

The W500 uses the Advanced Dock, which is FAR better than the mini dock plus. The Advanced Dock supports Dual-link DVI, while the mini dock does not. I'm going to write up a post on my opinion of the mini dock plus soon.

So if you own a 30" monitor then don't buy a W510 ?
I'm wishing I'd bought a new machine last year more and more, as I would have preferred 1920X1200 also

I don't think that's quite true. If you have a dual link dvi monitor. I think there are displayport 30" monitors that support 2560x1600. Don't know the perf though.
I do like the 1200 lines myself, but the larger 15.6" was very nice and it was very very clear. Maybe the next rev lenovo will work. I hope they bring the corei7 with the 4 memory slots down to the w500 size.

If you have a W510 and a single 30" Dual-link DVI monitor, you can an adapter like
this one to drive your monitor at 2560x1600 resolution. This is an active adapter, which is what you need. The $30-or-so "passive" adapters won't cut it for resolutions beyond 1920x1200.

Does this adapter support Windows & MacOS both? It should work right?

Just noticed this comment now.
What about the Advanced Mini-Dock (the previous series)? It has a DVI-D port, and I seem to remember that it should support dual-link DVI, but not sure. Do you know?

It does. I use the Adv Mini Dock with my 30" LCD at 2560 x 1600

Rocks

Are you using display Port or dual dvi?
I spent alot of time with lenovo support and they concluded that it would not work with dual dvi. just displayport.

No. I never said that.

I was replying to HIM. Adv Mini Dock 2504-10U from the previous T6x series with a T61 is what I am using for Dual-link DVI-D.
W510: I don't have a dock as yet and have not tested its OUT 'capabilities' / limitations. I'd love to know more. I guess I'll see if/how it can be hooked up to the 30" @ 2560x1600. I am guessing it would need the Mini/DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI Active thingy because... my 30" LCD, I think does not have DisplayPort. If it did then I'd probably be able to do a direct connect.
