Hello,

today i just downloaded the lates ATI catalyst from lenovo website for w500.
what i intended to do was to unstall the previous version of the catalyst installed on the system, but i accidentally uninstall the ATI mobility fireglv5700 instead.

what i did was:
1. in device manager, i clicked on display adapters which shows ATI mobility and Mobile intel
2. Then i right-clicked on ATI mobility and chose 'uninstall'
3. The computer rebooted
4. not knowing what a mess i have just done, i installed the latest ATI catalyst.

Now the ATI mobility is missing in the device manager, under display adapters. i lost the ability to switch graphic to 'high performance'. Only Mobile Intel shows under the display adapters.

What should i do to bring back the ATI active again?

cheers

Lenovo W500 - 4062-3NM

Hi brother, i don't know what went into my head but it turns out that i downloaded a driver for windows 7...no wonder it gave problems on my vista :SH!: hahaha.

the root of the problem was that my screen brightness occasionally become unresponsive and stuck on the lowest level of brightness, the OSD shows up on the screen when i play around with FN+Home/end, but the actual screen brightness doesn't change. Chasing around the answer on the net, landed me on a lenovo forum thread that discussing the same exact problem i'm having, and it was suggested (with a link) to download the given driver. I clicked the link, downloaded the driver and so on. However, it turns out the thread was a window 7 specific thread! that was the driver for windows 7 and i didn't pay much attention to it... haha silly me.

No probs matey ...

Glad u picked it up ... s**it happens!!

Also , while u on topic of win7 , I would seriously recommend you UPDATE OS to Win7 , especially X64bit in win7 would make your laptop ZING !!
I am sure Lenovo has sent you a Win7 upgrade Dvd ( or they will soon) If my chance you happen to buy it BEFORE the UPGRADE program , I would call Tech Supp (they also in Melb) and see if you cna BUY the win7 Dvd ( last time I checked it was like 50$Aus) its the cheapest and most wise money spent for your W500!!

I am sure you cna read lots of reviews here on w500 series with win7x64 bit

Cheers and good luck mate

Tonight the win7 x64 has just been installed, now it's in the process of windows updating and those sort of stuffs...thinkvantage system update software really helps making things simpler...gotta love that!

4GB ram shows 3.90 usable

i'm glad i move on to win7, you're absolutely correct, it goes ZING now :D
