In terms of what's up with Lenovo and the lack of W510 units, they've had a shortage of FHD displays. Plus, if you look at
posts from people saying their W510 needs repair, a number of them say their new motherboards are on a long backorder.
So those may be the culprits.

Glad I read here before I do an order with Lenovo. This is what is great about these forums. My X301 will do fine till Lenovo gets some "decent" W510 units out the door.
Thanks

I just received shipping notification for a W510 with FHD + Multi-touch and SSD ordered Jan 22.
Take it for what it's worth, but this could be a sign that Lenovo is getting all the parts required to manufacture these units.
Either that, or they need to pad some Q1 numbers and are going to charge my credit card now while drawing out the "shipping" time.
I'll post again when the unit arrives at my door.
Hopefully the supply issues have been resolved and the high-end configs will be back on their website soon. They probably have to work through a 2-month backlog of orders so be prepared to be patient if you're ordering one of these units today.

Even the HD+ screen seems to be back ordered and the FHD screen does not even show as an option on their website. I have a hard time anyone orders a W510 with a HD 1366x768 screen, so this supply situation is probably killing their sales.

According to the info I have obtained yesterday, from a reasonably reliable source within Lenovo, there is a supply issue with HD+, and both versions of FHD displays for the T & W 510 series. They "expect availabilty" to return to reasonable levels by May. That said, based on personal experience so far this year, I've abandoned all expectations. Of the six new T & W series ThinkPads I've ordered on a one at a time basis, only one order was built to the specs I specified when configuring it online. Delivery time was cited as four weeks upon order confirmation, and it arrived nine weeks later. Every other order was either configured wrong, or lost by Lenovo. An amazing experience I might not have believed had I not experienced it firsthand. Hello, Lenovo? Anybody home?

i bet its because in the past the W series wasnt Lenovo's most popular line of notebooks, as it was pretty much identical to T500. I haven't ever seen a W500 in flesh myself, while T500 was very abundant. Now they made the model rather different and it looks alot better on paper than T series, so increased order number leads to supply issues with displays and motherboards.
By the way the W510 is an awesome machine (huge improvement over T400/500 models) with a really great screen, something that Lenovo haven't released in a long time. I am absolutely loving mine.

I thought these newer wide screens were supposed to be easier to manufacture? Heck, I like others, would rather see them go back to the nice tall screen. I know that is not going to happen.
I went to the Lenovo site to go ahead and bite the bullet but when I saw 4+ weeks I knew what that meant!
I will wait and hope and life is still good with the new X301! Win 7 made the 301 almost "spunky"!
Thanks everyone

I think the FHD screens have finally started shipping ... I have been waiting prior to December (!!!) and I now have a tracking number

interestingly my credit card has yet to be charged ...
It's been a long wait, I hope its worth it (replacing my T60p)

I made my usual Monday call to obtain the status of FHD display availability and was told by my regular (semi-reliable) source that the status remains the same, they expect full supplies beginning in May.

Dell just put a Precision M4500 mobile workstation up on their site. I'm not buying, but it's 2 memory slots shy of the specs I want. oi.
STEP ON THE GAS LENOVO!
looking forward to May I guess.

You know what it's funny I just ordered a W510 last Monday (3/22) and it had a scheduled ship date of 5/6/2010. However would you believe that I just received it yesterday? 3/29/2010. That's one week I'm impressed.

If you can hold out for Lenovo, I dare say you will be thrilled with your new W510.
.
I'm extremely happy to report that my new T510 is an ideal model with fabulous keyboard attributes, build quality worthy of the ThinkPad moniker, & so much more. Believe me if it were anything less, I would be the first to report it.
.
I too, wait for my fully loaded W510 Workstation. With T510 in hand, and well tested after hours & hours of usage, I'm confident the W510 will easily meet my needs.
.
Cheers...

Well, I almost did the un-think-able last week...
(get it? un-think-able, haha)
I ordered an HP 8540w, with the i7820QM CPU and a 1920x1080 screen.
But then I chickened out and cancelled the order. It was also rather expensive. Thanks to the sister forum for HPs here, I was able to get the 28% discount but it was still a premium over the HD screened W510. The 8540w also looks... dippy. that's not a fair criticism I guess.
Anyhoo, I've used Thinkpads for the last 10 years and my comfort level with them is way too high. I have an x200 now that has been so completely utterly faultless... what can I say. i'm whipped.
So, I guess realistically I can order my w510 in may, and maybe get it early June. I was close to getting a W500 when it came out, but I'm glad I waited for w510, it seems like a much more mature product.
sigh!

jsfrank -
I'm coming from the opposite side. I was a Thinkpad user when it was still IBM, then when it was sold to Lenovo I went over to Dell. However I have not been entirely impressed with the Dell lately and decided to go back to the ThinkPad line. (for got how much I enjoyed them). I love my W510 However I wish I had the FHD display (can always upgrade when they are back in stock)

Ten points! Now that's the kind of humor we need around here...
jsfrank wrote:I ordered an HP 8540w, with the i7820QM CPU and a 1920x1080 screen. But then I chickened out and cancelled the order. It was also rather expensive.
I just took delivery of my HP 8740w for the sole purpose of trying one out, and most of all to see what the DreamColor display is all about. It's a rather odd looking laptop, much different than I expected after seeing the pictures. While it was obscenely expensive, that price was only partially reflected in the build quality and even less so, in the styling and design. Overall a big disappointment in those two areas, it gets worse when one takes the entire machine into consideration. While certainly not a bad computer by any stretch, there are too many "little things" that disappoint. The DreamColor display was less than stellar and even after I calibrated it, there was still much left to be desired. If there was no such think as a ThinkPad then the comparison would be moot, but in my opinion HP _still_ has a long way to go to achieve the overall balance, ease of use (keyboard / trackpoint), as a ThinkPad. I could go on and on about the other areas, but frankly I have no desire to review this machine.
jsfrank wrote:Anyhoo, I've used Thinkpads for the last 10 years and my comfort level with them is way too high. I have an x200 now that has been so completely utterly faultless... what can I say.
This rings very true for me as well. Once one has used a ThinkPad every day for work, day in and day out, gotten used to IBM's (now IBM/Lenovo) great web site with massive self serve resources, and great parts availability, it's hard to adapt to one of the "newer brands" like HP. I have a nagging feeling that whatever I might need in the future will either not be there, or cost me a lot of time to find.
jsfrank wrote:I was close to getting a W500 when it came out, but I'm glad I waited for w510
I believe that you will be very happy that you waited. I know that both my T510 and W510 are great machines that have brought back a lot of my ThinkPad enthusiasm that faded during the period in which they were pushing out T400 / T500 machines.
Cheers...

I wonder how many people did not have the luxury of all that time to wait, and bought something other than a ThinkPad?

I went and bought the brand new MBPro 15 i7 and installed Win7 Ultimate and all worked well except the WiFi reception sucked. Even my iPad get full bars reception in my house even down to the dock but the MBPro could hardly muster 1/4 of full reception so I pulled the trigger on a new W510. Be here tomorrow and the MBPro was returned today!

I did not order it, I just paid a premium and purchased it on eBay.
I lack the patience to order. I had ordered but Lenovo kept pushing back my date till I just canceled.

Wow, it's amazing that Lenovo's supply-chain idiocy has forced us Thinkpad fans to Ebay.
