Can you upgrade a W701 to add digitizer/pantone sensor?

#1 Post by johnp126 » Tue Apr 20, 2010 8:01 pm

We have a high end W701 but it does not have the wacom digitizer and color sensor. From what Lenovo tells me you need that to do the Pantone color sensor with software.

60Y4938 ** this part number can be purchased and I opened up the W701 (took off the palmrest) and there is the connector on the mother board. all it is lacking is a bit of support under the digitizer.

Anyone know if we add the new wrist rest will that allow the W701 to have the pantone color calibration via software?

Lenovo Engrs said you would not want to do this but the wrist rest is a user replaceable part.

I think it can be done, any ideas?

Well, from what I can tell, the color calibrator and the WACOM digitizer are an option you can select at the time of ordering. The W700 could be configured with only the calibrator and without the digitizer, and if you call Lenovo, you can do quite a bit more in terms of "individualizing" your purchase.

As for after-the-fact adding the option, the calibrator on the keyboard may be user-replaceable, but not adding the actual hardware underneath.

The hardware service reference does not list any special electronics (like a card or different mainboard) for either the digitizer or pantone sensor, and the palm-rest is categorized as 'Optional Service' which I think means it is technically a customer replacable unit. The only additional part related to the digitizer or color sensor listed in the parts list appears to be 60Y4910 "Spacer, palm rest digitizer LH | Spacer, palm rest digitizer RH" and the digitizer pen case assembly.

I'm pleased to see that the HWREF also only lists the solid-backed stiff keyboards for the W701 :-)

Yes! :) Do we know if the DisplayPort will carry video and audio this time around?

I have done this but on W700. I don't know from what W70x i have got palmrest - i can't find any stickers with FRU on it. But i have found Verizon Wireless sticker.
Digitizer pen case assembly i have taken from X201 tablet and it fits and work perfectly.
Xrite colorimeter haven't worked at all:( I think that problem in colorimeter or ribbon cable neither in Thinkpad itself.

I've successfully changed the palmrest from one without the Wacom Digitizer and the Colorimeter to one with for a W701.

You need:

- FRU 60Y4938 - Palmrest with WaCom Digitizerpad & Colorimeter HueyPro (the FRU 44C9506 from the W700 doesn't fit to the W701 - wrong cable type)
- FRU 45N3146 - Holder for the Digitizer-Pen
- FRU 04W1477 - Digitizer Pen

Drivers:
Colorimeter: http://support.lenovo.com/at/de/downloa ... ate:xg02ds
Wacom Digitizer Pad: http://support.lenovo.com/at/de/downloa ... Track=Solr

Greetz,

I would not have thought it would be any great feat of rocket science to change out these parts and add a bit of software to get it to work. Especially since the connectors are right there on the MB.
