Memory question on for W510 - Need Help

#1 Post by Greg Gebhardt » Wed Apr 21, 2010 4:57 pm

My W510 will arrive tomorrow and has two 2gb sticks of RAM making up teh 4gb RAM with two slots empty.

I have two sticks of DDR3 PC3-8500 CL-7 Unbuffered NON-ECC DDR3 1066 1.5v 512meg x 64 (Crucial's Part number CT1226773)

Will this work in my W510. Do I need to take out the existing RAM that came from the factory or could I add this additional RAM to give me a total of 12GB. 8 is more than I will need so if the two 4gb sticks will work I would remove the factory RAM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Greg,
I seem to remmeber that Crucial PN is for APPLE Laptops .... but not sure if it will NOT WORK in W510 (am no memory expert) Might be better off to sell/trade them for these .....shown below(which is super nice on my W510- 4318cto)

What I have on my Fully loaded W510cto with = 4 x KHX1600C7S3K2/4GX (I am using these in preferance to the KHX1066C5S3K2/4GX as its 1600mhtz but the downside is its 7CL rated & ideally I want a 1600mhtz with 5CL rated). I had to special order these from Kingston (as they had not been released at at that time - but are now in their product catalog)

Here is their link > http://www.kingston.com/hyperx/products/khx_sodimm.asp

I can tell you - these newer W510's with i7 EXtreme Edition Proc; 16GBHyperX ; 1GB of Video, and 2 x 256 intel SSD's - makes this laptop = very very nice for autocad etc. Nope not a Gamer so dont know how any XMP-Games etc would do on my setup!

Hope this helps......

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and ordered two additional sticks of 2gb RAM to populate the board with 4 total for 8gb RAM. I will just sell the Apple RAM on eBay.

Yes on AutoCad, 20 year veteran and lots of PhotoShop.

My 510 arrives today and will replace the 300gb drive with a Corsair 256gb SSD right off the bat. Glan you are enjoying yours, looking forward to the touch screen and CPU horse power!

I thank YOU for the help!

W510 arrived an hour ago and making the restore disks now. The W510 build isWAY more robust than my W500 series. Color on the higher resolution screen are quite nice. The 510 seems to be a great refresh for the W series. Looking forward to getting the new drive and memory installed and then start installing my software

Does it get any better than that? I don't think so.

If it gets better I do not want to know about it.

all 8gb RAM are installed, SSD installed, and recovery is complete. Installing software and it is installing VERY fast. Reboots are in less time than other laptops will wake from sleep!

LOL! I have never had a laptop wake up in 3 seconds!

Maybe it is colder where you are and it is a hardware thing! :P
