I have an ultrabay III adapter with a 320GB SATA drive. I'd like to put in the 1TB western digital drive, but it's 12.5mm high...

Does anyone know if it'll fit in the w510? If not, what's the biggest drive that would fit?

EDIT: I thought those WD 750 GB drives were 12.5mm.

The W510 does now use a 12.7mm optical drive. In theory 1TB should fit, but I don't have any first hand knowledge. If you're concerned there's always the 750GB 9.5mm drive WD just released.

Yikes, 750GB in 2.5" form factor? That's amazing. And now even that expensive at $120. There is a 640GB one from Hitachi, too, I believe.

How much of a difference does the cache on the hard drives make? The basic 5,400rpm ones usually have 8MB, as does the one you mentioned. I guess it doesn't matter much if you're only using the drives for storage, or am I missing something here?

Although Lenovo doesn't offer one, several Chinese vendors on eBay are offering full-height (12.7mm) SATA ultrabay enhanced drive adaptors to fit our beloved W series (W500, W510, W700, W701) without the 3mm gap that appears above the official Lenovo Adapter III. You even have your choice between models that take 9mm and ones that swallow a full 12.5mm 2.5" drive.

For the record, I buy both bits and bulk from Chinese vendors on eBay all the time, don't let the 'far away' put you off. Aside from the delivery taking longer, it's just like any other purchase. I've ordered two for evaluation myself, stay tuned (I suspect the adapters will beat the arrival of the new W701)

I bought one of the Chinese ultrabay adapters for my W510 and it works and seems like it could take a 12.5mm drive, I currently have a standard 9mm drive but there's plenty of room. The issue I find it the tray is loose in the bay because its not thick enough. What I did was use some rubber feet to help keep it moving around. For the cost its well worth it.

I'm waiting for your report ,then bite the bullet.

My older T43 had a Ultrabay battery that added another 1.5 hrs (for long flights).

Is there such a thing for the W510? In checking with Lenovo the answer is no. Is there a Chinese market Ultrabay battery?

There is no provision in the serial ultrabay on a w510 to support a battery, however there is an external 9 cell slice battery that attaches to the bottom of the machine.

I just go my W510 (NTK29GE) a few days ago and installed a 160 GB Postville SSD as system drive.

I tried the WD10TEVT Scorpio 1 TB hard drive as 2nd drive to have more storage.
The dvd drive has a height of 12.7mm, so it should fit. It works with the standard bay adapter
and is recognized from the system too. No problems to boot from this drive either.

Hi - not sure what you're describing here, could you elaborate or possibly post a link to a pic(s) of the 'slice' battery?
