W510 HD+ Screen 1600 x 900 - Anyone seen or used this panel?
Hi guys,
Full HD is out of the running for the next month or so,
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=85569 -It's a shame but kudos to Lenovo for a step in the right direction toward IPS I guess.
The screen resolution isn't ideal - but I can get a half decent deal on the W510 CTO in Shanghai and the units are actually in stock, but only with the HD+ Screens. The model has a color calibrator for some reason (even though the screen is not an RGB LED one) but I'm hoping this is a sign that it is also a good panel.
The resolution should be good for viewing 2 documents side by side? Apart from scrolling vertically perhaps...
The problem is all reviews online where done using full HD displays so I can read no comment on the 1600 x 900 HD + Panel. I'll visit the shop next week and have a look but would like to see if anyone here has feedback.

Ok not many people have seen this screen,
From this review: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo- ... ost6127054
The reviewer says the contrast ratio is 550:1 which I'm not sure is correct - because it would be higher than the dell xps 16 rgb led or even the FHD W510 screen (unlikely)
(according to this source http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Len ... 594.0.html the W510 FHD contract is about 514)
To put it in perspective though, the T410 is the lowest contrast laptop screen ever reviewed at anandtech with 161 contrast - http://www.anandtech.com/show/2976/leno ... business/6

Why wouldn't it be correct? Everything I've seen indicates that the HD+ has slightly better viewing angle and contrast. The FHD has slightly less contrast and starts to distort faster, the saving grace of the wide gamut though is that the picture doesn't look bad until you get to some extremes because there is so much color saturation (ie: it starts to distort faster but needs to go out further from center to look bad/invert). From the sounds of it, for a standard SRGB panel, the HD+ is a good one. It just doesn't have the color gamut of the FHD.

Infinius, I can see you know your colors and panels - thanks for the input - I wasn't aware of the different color spaces.
So this panel is a good one - very high contrast, good viewing angles and probably very good black and white levels - If that's the case I'll have no problem settling for the 1600 x 900 resolution.

I have a T510 with the HD+ display. It's very nice, colors are bright, fonts are clear and sharp, I'm very impressed. Out of the box it was a bit on the blue side, then I simply used the Win7 built in calibration and corrected it just fine. Now whites are pure without the blue case. The only compromise is what you lose vertically. If you can live with that, then your fine. While I certainly prefer the 16:10 ratio display, I don't mind this one at all.pnolan wrote:The problem is all reviews online where done using full HD displays so I can read no comment on the 1600 x 900 HD + Panel. Hi, how is the brightness of this panel? I like 300 nits or so for watching video.
Re: W510 HD+ Screen 1600 x 900 - Anyone seen or used this panel?
I ordered a W510 with this panel. I usually have my TPs docked, and use a monitor with wireless keyboard and mouse when I'm working in the home office. So I'm in the market for a really good monitor at a good price.
Currently I have two TPs, and use the separate inputs to an older 19" 4:3 Dell Ultrasharp, and just flip between the inputs with a button. I like the adjustable stand, the ability to pivot to portrait, and the internal USB hub.
Dell has a new 23" Ultrasharp http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/prod ... u=320-9270 that is 1920x1080. It seems a 23" or 24" widescreen monitor gets me to about the same height, but the 1920x1080 limitation doesn't do justice to what the W510 video can produce.
I'm looking for recommendations for a good monitor that won't break the bank (since I just bought the W510) and takes advantage of this great machine.
I am a programmer, not a graphic artist, but my interests are communications & instrumentation so displaying dashboards and spectra are likely.
Although I have not yet grown up, my eyes have aged, so tiny fonts might be possible if they are crystal clear.
I guess I should ask RonS for his opinion - I am mightily impressed with his work!
I'm sure glad the ThinkPad forum is still around. I have been a member since the days on CompuServe - I started in 1980, although that was long before Bill's TP forum arrived. Each time I need a TP or help with an issue, this is the place I come, and am always grateful the Community continues to evolve.
