hi audio...

AM Curious ?> did u install a Q series proc? or Planning to ?

might want to look at this option.... rather than W700 (as W70x series has few other ADDED HARDWARE items in BIOS that would be of no use to W5xx series)

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-74859

just a suggestions ...

Cheers

W500 and W700 have different hardware and use entirely different BIOS images. I think you would end up with a non-functioing decorative piece, instead of a computer.

Sorry for anwsering now but Ive been a few days away...

I bought a QX9300 installed it and the W500 wont start. The Fan, LED etc. gets for few second on but then the laptop stops...

Ive talked to a service guy from lenovo and he told me the W500 bios doesnt support the qx9300 cpu because the id of the cpu isnt listed...
There a two ways to get this thing running, adding the id string of qx9300 to the w500 bios or flashing the w700 bios. The frist one needs a expert of bios and the second one could brick the board...

Ive already decompressed and splited the bios of both into moduls (rom) and the sizes of every modul were simiular...

@ ausmike: 8x8GB = 64GB of RAM? on two slots?

Hi Aud*....
If you search for a user called "zender" you will see lots of threads for BIOS changes ....eg; "" zender w500 ""
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 00#p570092

Sorry If I missunderstand your msg re 2 x 8GB memory chips
its easy to do - simply open the slots at back of laptop and inseet them in
and At pwoer stage - HIT F1 (so thst BIOS recorganises the memory laod & updates its inturnals) and then SAVE & EXIT ,, and you set
2x8GB memory in W500 - can be loaded with Std BIOS - no changes necessary
( make sure you have the latest bios update- and read READ ME TXT there)

PM sent....

Hope this help
cheers

hi Everyone ,,,,,,

*** as noted elsewhere in my previous posts on this forum****
Aud*..... well for maybe the SAME REASONS mr 'zender' is not replying (unelss he is AWAY!!) I CANNOT SUPPLY / SUPPORT NOR ABLE to HELP PEOPLE modify and or CHNAGE BIOS.

BIOS Software HAS COPYRIGHT and belongs to the writers(even LENOVO bios) ...
I CANNOT AND WILL NOT SUPPLY NOR CHANGE or ABLE TO HELP other people.

All I can say is (per the orginal post subject title) is that YES ;;;;
a) you can chahge Bios ( at your OWN RISK ... warranty be VIODEDED etc etc)
b) yes you can ADD ( easily under current bios) 2x 8GB memory ( I have currently running W510 with kindston Hyper's)

Hope this helps

Cheers

Hiya Marin ...Giday mate :o ; knew you would be picking on me soon AGAIN lol

FYI = if you try and configure a new W510 (lenovo USA W'site) U see ....Memory =
you can see there is option to pick '16GB' memory ,,,,,,,, HOWEVER there is also a thing at 'end' of that sentance (4DIMM) ,,,,

Mike Jumps at sight of 4 SLOTS = means he can ADD 4 x 8GB or 4 x 16GB(special build items)

SINCE I/We have had been asking Lenovo/IBM for a 64GB 'workstation laptop' ,,,,,
and thus this W series laptop became our PROJECT within our internal techie guys, and (un)lucky we have had another issue at the same time relating to AUTODESK software ,,,,,,
in short , we have now a PROJECT laptop (under heavy testing) with 64GB RAM ( sorry cannot expand on name/brands yet due to legal reason ).....
Thus my 'orginal post' saying BIOS works from W701 ( to cater for Q series Proc & extra ram) ,,,,,

however 16GB of kingston Hyper's (link below) is working on two standard - non project laptop w510's nicely:
KHX1600C7S3K2/4GX
http://www.kingston.com/hyperx/products/khx_sodimm.asp

puhh Im gonna sell the cpu there is no one who can help me, Ive posted already here

http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-M ... the-qx9300

but no response...

Im now tired of searching a way to get this working, Ive posted into 5-7 boards, called lenovo and no help.
Im more then disappointed cuz lenovo wont help. I think Ive boght a latop top of the range and it wont support a cpu by bios

Now the cpu is here for more then a month and I cant handle it :-(
What can happend if I brick the board, I call the support and tell them the laptop wont start I dont know why, they came change the board or not?
