Just made the jump from T500 to W510 (820QM) over the weekend.

Overall it is a nice machine, but I am a bit disappointed, here is why:

Performance
I think it is even slower than my T500 (T9600 @ 2.8GHz).
Any jboss/websphere startup takes about the same time, and sometimes is a bit slower than with the old machine.
I guess it is due to the lower clock of the CPU when handling more than one thread at a time.

Display
Another thing is the screen, although it is very nice in regards to colors, contrast and brightness, the 16:9 ration is something you have to get used to.
I placed it next to my T500 which has the 16:10 (1680:1050) and the disappointing part is that the new display (1920:1080) even though it has the same vertical pixels, is at least half a inch short. It is just so much wasted space.

Noise
the CPU whining is very noticeable

Battery life
pathetic, no more comment

freakwave,

I'm wondering if you can help post back the physical size of your W510 LCD screen?

My T42 LCD screen is 28.6mm X 21.6mm (WxH), for 1400x1050 screen resolution, 4:3 ratio, and the DPI is just perfect for me.

I'm wondering how (bad) the physical vertical size have become for the FHD W510 LCD screen with 14:9 ratio, which I suspect is starting to affect font readability. for DPI is significantly higher from what I've heard.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Can you further describe or better yet document the whine? Am interested in a new TP but too many stories about the whine and want to hear what I might have to deal with before making a decision. I recognize this happens across all notebook brands not just TPs but also Sony Vaio etc. Do you use YouTube? Can you upload for us?

Just my opinion but I founf the W510 a pretty good upgrade in perfornace over my 2.8Ghz W500.

The keyboard on the W510 is the best I have ever used.
