W500 Performance Index

Hello Everyone.

I am really curious about the performance of the W500 in comparison to what the new W510 offers.

I was on the fence about getting a new W510 but because of a few key factors I stepped back and grabbed a high end W500 instead. I didnt like the 16:9 aspect ratio, the huge 135W power brick, and the lack of FHD display from Lenovo website.

My W500 (4058-CTO) is configured as follows:

- 3.06Ghz processor
- 8GB RAM
- 2 x Intel 160GB SSD Drives in non-Raid config

Attached is a screenshot of my Performance Index. Was wondering if some of you W510 guys and some other W500 guys could chime in and post some of your scores for comparison.

I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit.

Video and HD access are very close but the memory and CPU is quite a bit faster on that W510.

The 2 x SSDs make this machine lightening quick so I hope I havent given up too much performance. I use it as my main development machine so I run alot of VMs.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Lenovo restocks the FHD screens and does something about shrinking that mammoth power supply...

yes, the 2 ssd make the difference.
If I would be in your position, I would wait for next years update.

I run vm's as well and in real life the machine is not faster at all, rather a bit slower since the base clock on mine is just 1.72 GHz.
My jboss + oracle DB in vmware starts up the application in the same time as on my T500.

The only real reason for upgrading would be if you need more than 8Gig of Memory.

so to summarize:

Cons:
- worse battery life
- bigger power adapter
- you need a new dock
- smaller vertical screen size
- about the same speed

Pros:
- build quality is better (palm rest is finally rock solid - its about time)
- task manager looks awesome when opening
- more memory

What virtualization software do you use?

If your VM is multithreaded, you should be able to realize significant gains by upping the number of vCPUs in the VM (assuming that your VM is CPU-bond).
