Ipad won't charge on W510..any ideas?

#1 Post by Proteus » Wed Dec 01, 2010 6:01 pm

Can't get my Ipad to charge via ANY of the USB ports (2 USB 3.0, or single yellow USB 2.0) on the W510. Supposedly should be able to work on all of them. Any ideas? Has anyone else gotten this to work scucesfully?

Proteus, as Chatbox indicated, the iPad/iPhone violate the USB 2 spec for the max amount of power a device can draw from a USB port, so I believe you'll have to use the yellow USB 3 port at the rear of the W510, which is designed to supply nearly twice as much power as USB 2. You may also need to explicitly enable, within the BIOS and Power Manager, charging for the iPhone in order to get the iPad to charge (especially if you want it to charge while the laptop is turned off -- a scary thought, considering the "overheating while turned off" problem the W510 exhibited). And see the following, which includes info on changing the BIOS/Power-Manger settings:

At first, I'd try the above with the laptop plugged into AC power.

Good luck!

It WILL charge, but just very slowly.

Standard USB power supplies 500mA, which at 5 Volts means 2.5 Watts. But the iPad charger provides, and the iPad expects, 10 Watts.

Here's the thing: When the screen is on and plugged into a normal USB port, it's using power about as fast as it's taking in, so a "not charging" message appears at the top of the iPad display. When you turn off the screen, then it's actually slowly charging, but you can't see it. Kind of like the light in your refrigerator.

I can charge my iPad on my W510's USB ports, but it takes a long time. More than just overnight... more like 10 hours or so.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.
