New W510, a few questions.

#1 Post by erdesw » Tue Dec 07, 2010 6:03 pm

I just received my new W510. As much as it pained me, I pulled it out of the shipping box, unwrapped it, and unscrewed the keyboard. I may as well have been working on a bomb the way I removed everything :). I did so to install 4x4GB RAM modules, my OEM 6300 wlan, and my OEM MC8790V. I completely forgot about that nasty start-up check 1804...

I had hacked my old T61 to the point that it didn't care about either cards, thanks to the modded BIOS, but on the W510 it appears there isn't a modded BIOS.

1. Anyone know if there is a mod in the works? I saw a W500 bios on the site but was unsure if that works with the 510.

2. Anyone have the whitelist for the W510? Will it accept a Lenovo FRU mc8765? I knew I should have bought the Gobi....At the time of customizations I thought I wouldn't need it since I have my brand-new 8790V (voice, gps, and wwan in one card). Fail on my part.

3. Any way to rewrite the descriptors on my ultimate-n to a compatible FRU descriptor? The funny thing is I upgraded to the WiMax thinking the extra cost was worth having a spare card that was WiMax tolerant in case my area ever got it.

[EDIT] The item below is fixed. You must use the lenovo software version, not the one direct from MFG. I believe lenovo's is 1.2.4.1 and the MFG's is 1.5.1. [EDIT]
4. I reinstalled my OS to update it to 7 Ulimate x64 from Pro, and to customize my OS build. Everything's restored and working but I cannot see my color sensor. Any ideas? I have the software installed. I never saw a driver and there are no unknown devices in my dev. manager.

Love this new laptop though. It's a beast. It runs as smooth as my desktop, and it isn't as big as a bus (my case is huge...)!
Iffy on the multi-touch. Have to get used to it. If i get WWAN working, I may never use my desktop again...

Thanks!!!

Sorry, I don't have any answers for your questions... but I also received my new W510 on December 07... Love it so far...

The display (FHD) is not a nice as my T60p's IPS but it is close...

No problem. I think my issues are resolved. Got the BIOS. Just need to hack around in AC to fix the hardware switch. You get the touch screen variant? I had my T61 for a while, and it faded a lot. I am not sure of the brightness versus an unfaded T61, but does your W510 feel like it's burning your eyes out after using for a while on full brightness?

If you are interested in the hacked BIOS, I can give you a link. Only issue I noticed is it beeps 4-5 for 2-cycles right before BIOS load.

Hi :)
I've too a wonderful T60p 15' IPS and I'm planning getting a W 510 or a W520 Sandy Bridge (for the SATA3).
Your TP are T60p = 13.2" x 10.6" x 1.2-1.4" DPI: 133,3
W 510 = 14.68" x 9.65" x 1.29-1.44" DPI: 141
My question: Is your W 510 display(1 inch less) depth enough to be comfortable ?
I'm a bit afraid of those 16:9 displays.
I'm wondering if the next W 710 or 720 will be a little less bulky !? :)

Hi,

I had zero issues using the wider screen (is this what you mean by depth?). I am finding it very comfortable to use.

As other have mentioned, the FHD is a lot brighter than the IPS... so much it is a strain on the eyes unless turned down to level 9. At this level, the colors are brilliant and intensity is a little brighter than the IPS.

Hi,
Fine I trust you coz you're using both models
Let's wait for the SB models and I'll get a W 510 or 520 according to the SATA 6 Gbps on the SB
