W500 Upgrades -edit-

#1 Post by db$ » Mon Dec 13, 2010 11:55 am

I've decided to upgrade my W500. I have the following new and replacement parts being installed:

A) Advanced port replicator 2503-10U. ($135) This is a great port replicator that adds functionality to the W500. I particaularly find the PCI express bay slot very useful. I will be installing a additioanl ATI V5200 graphic card (3480x2400 total output) ($75)which has two (2) DVI outputs for multi-monitors. I plan on running a total of five (5) monitors. I can achieve this by:

Configuring one of the two DVI outputs on the ATI V5200 at 3840 x 1200 resolution to a Matrox Dualhead2go splitter to two (2) monitors.
One (1) monitor to the other DVI output from the ATI V5200 in the express bay.
I have a total of three (3) monitors driven from the express bay slot in the port replicator.
The other two (2) monitors will be driven from the DVI and VGA outputs (also on the port replicator) driven a native ATI V5700 graphic card in the W500.
Five (5) total monitors driven from the 2503-10U Advanced Port Replicator.

B) 8GB RAM Upgrade. Two (2) 4 GB SO DIMM 204-Pin- DDR3 chips $169.98
C) 15.4" WUXGA LCD new $200

The W510 looks like a great machine, but I do not like the fact that the port replicator available for it does not have the Express Bay Slot for a graphic card. You get around this by getting a ViDock 3 or 4 which is an external ExpressCard to PCI-Express adapter chassis. I heard very good reviews. http://vidock3.com/ This unit connects to your ExpressCard card connection. I will need this if I decide six (6) monitors and above.

I will inform all if anything melts running all of these monitors..... :?
